Sunderland fanatic Alderson sends pair to Newcastle win

KEVIN Ryan had a weekend to remember, with plenty of winners at many different venues.

Ryan and his stable jockey Neil Callan were in double form at Newcastle onSaturday with Roker Park and Horatio Carter. Roker Park got the ball rolling in the totesport6 handicap, and afterwards his owner Trevor Alderson – who hails from Seaham, said: “I’d had a winner at every course in the north of England apart from here so it’s great to have done it.

Alderson, a die-hard Sunderland supporter, didn’t have to wait very long for his second course winner as his colours were carried to victory in the 7f handicap by Horatio Carter, again trained by Kevin Ryan and well-ridden by Neil Callan.

A few hundred miles south, but also victorious, was Tamagin who scored in the totequadpot Heritage Handicap at Windsor. The six-year-old made all the running to win under jockey Fergus Sweeney. Ryan’s good fortune kept going on Sunday with Benbaun, who recorded an amazing seventh success at the Curragh in the Group 3 Sapphire Stakes.

Not surprisingly, a trip back over the Irish Sea is on the cards for the eight-year-old later this month, and then he will be aimed for the Nunthorpe at York.

As ever, Mark Johnston is bang among the winners, and the Scotsman set yet another stable record at Pontefract on Monday. When Straits Of Hormuz won the 10f maiden under Joe Fanning, it was the 38th winner in a calendar month, the most ever sent out from Kingsley House stables in that space of time.

Earlier in the day at Pontefract, Ann Duffield was on the scoresheet with Hel’s Angel, who came home clear in the Fillies Handicap. San Silvestro made it a double on the day for Duffield who made all the running in the 1mi handicap at Musselburgh.

Just half an hour later, Dark Moment landed a fairly big gamble for the shrewd Alan Dickman yard when he came in front in the 7f handicap.

Duffield was again successful at Hamilton on Tuesday, with Suitably Accoutred who came home in front with over three lengths to spare in the staying handicap.

Later in the evening, Thirsk staged a six-race card, where Frankie Dettori was a popular visitor with the racegoers.

The Derby-winning jockey travelled from his Newmarket home for just one ride on Yigra in the 1mi handicap, and he didn’t let his supporters down as he got the better of Johnmanderville in a close finish.

Johnmanderville’s trainer and jockey Karl Burke and Andrew Elliot went one better the following day at Catterick when the duo teamed up to score in the 7f handicap with Bold Marc, who was recording his third course victory. Elliot went on to win the very next race on Red Cape for trainer Ruth Carr, who has enjoyed a fine season.

Another horse recording his third course success was Bijou Dan. The eight-yearold, trained by George Moore and ridden by P J McDonald, stayed on best on the day to win the 1mi 3f handicap.

The majority of the Middleham trainers have their horses in fine form at present with Pat Haslam, Jedd O’- Keefe and Simon West among the winners as well.

Haslam sent Hi Dancer up to Hamilton last week to land the Lady Amateur riders race.

The six year-old was given a confident ride by Emily Stead who works for the trainer.

Jedd O’Keeffe looks to have a smart three-year-old in Big Apple Boy, who made all the running to land the Mr Wolf Sprint Handicap at Pontefract on Monday. Rookie trainer Simon West was another handler with plenty to smile about over recent days.

West, who took over the running of Kate Milligan’s yard, has shown he is more than capable of doing the job as he saddled Obara D’Avril to win over hurdles last week at Marker Rasen, and Spiders Star was also so successful for the yard at Thirsk on Tuesday evening, at the odds of 12- 1.

The highlight of the weekend comes up tomorrow with the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown, where Derby winner Sea The Stars lines up. His trainer John Oxx sends his star animal across the Irish Sea after missing the Irish Derby due to soft ground.

Closer to home, Beverley stages a two-day fixture, getting under way this evening at 6.20pm with a six-race card. Ann Duffield sends Suitably Accoutred out again in the 1mi 4f handicap at 8.30pm.

An impressive winner at Hamilton on Tuesday and a repeat performance here would be enough to see the three year-old back in the winner’s enclosure.

The following day, Beverley stages a seven-race card, due off at 1.45pm.
