Wilson continues purple patch with title at Burgie Trials

NICOLA Wilson’s good run of form continued at the Burgie International Horse Trials in Scotland, where the Mortonon- Swale 32-year-old claimed the St James’s Place Wealth Management CIC* title.

The international one-dayevent, which ran along Burgie’s traditional three-day-events, attracted a good field of close on 30, including riders from Scotland, England, Germany, Ireland and Poland.

Nicola lay seventh after dressage on Joanna Joyce-Grey’s horse Fontan, in what was this new combination’s very first competition together.

They made it a good one, adding just one show jumping time penalty, in a phase where poles were falling like leaves, to that score. That moved them up to win by just under a mark.

Nicola, recently second at the Bramham CCI*** on Master Banks, also filled second place in the CCI**, the top three-day event section at Burgie.

This was on Ballyengland Rebel, who moved up from 11th after dressage with just 4.8 cross country time penalties, one of the quickest in the section, to add to that score.

The eight-year-old, who is by Ricardo Z, is owned by former Olympic dressage rider and Badminton three-day-event winner Christopher Bartle, from near Harrogate.

Nicola, reserve for the 2008 Olympic team, rounded off a great event with ninth place in the CCI* three-day event on the eight-year-old mare Goulton Eugenie, who finished on her dressage score to move up 16 places after dressage.

Stockton-on-Tees rider James Adams had been leading after dressage in this section on Pebbly Aga Khan, who scored a superb 36.5, but problems cross country meant the combination were unable to complete.

James did finish 15th in the CCI* on his second ride Forinth, who had been fifth after dressage but whose seven show jumping penalties on the final day tumbled him out of a possible top five finish.
