THE first of this year’s Dodson & Horrell 0.85m and 1.05m National Amateur Second Rounds were held at Harrogate Riding Centre in North Yorkshire and they drew competitors from around the country.

With qualification for the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships, held at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool during the 14th – 19th November, at the forefront of everyone’s minds, two fiercely fought classes took place.

Seven combinations posted a first round clear to take their place in the jump off, where course builder Drew Birtwistle set a technical track to lead to an exciting finale. Holly Gair from Chester Le Street, County Durham made light work of the tight turns with the ever consistent 20 year-old grey mare, Bowes Milky Way, owned by Wendy Gair, as this partnership produced the winning round in just 35.23 seconds.

Second place went to local rider Clare Birtwistle from Harrogate, North Yorkshire who eased her 14 year-old bay mare, Warina II across the finish line with a double clear in 37.70 seconds.

Nicola Roe from Alfreton, Derbyshire slipped in to third place riding Caroline Kisby’s 16 year-old grey gelding, Sockburn Impeccable. This pair delivered their double clear in 40.44 seconds.

Continuing her championship campaign in style, Holly Gair claimed both first and second place after a tense five horse jump off. Speed was of the essence as Holly crossed the finish line on board Stephen Gair’s 16 year-old grey mare, Usita Champ, in an unbeatable 36.34 seconds.

Holly went on to scoop second place on board Bowes Milky Way, a 20 year-old grey mare owned by Wendy Gair. This pair delivered their double clear in 42.56 seconds.

Finishing in third place was Amelia Bowring from Louth, Lincolnshire riding Donna Bella, an 8 year-old black mare owned by Laura Pritchard. This combination left all the fences standing on a double clear in 47.83 seconds.
