BACCARAT could go for the Coral Sprint Trophy at York on October 12 in a bid to land a second big sprint handicap this season.

The four-year-old, trained by Richard Fahey, took the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon in August but could not follow up in the Ayr Gold Cup when he was fifth to Highland Colori.

‘‘He ran OK at Ayr, but Paul Hanagan’s view was that he didn’t handle the ground as well as he would have liked and was a little bit on his head,’’ said Barry Simpson, racing manager to owner Sir Robert Ogden.

‘‘You look at it and think he was just staying again on at the finish.

‘‘We always thought he was a miler and Richard Fahey dropped him back to six and he won a Great St Wilfrid.

‘‘It wasn’t a bad run. He had a biggish weight as well and probably just didn’t get the run of the race. Being in the first four or five in a race like that is a good run.

You are up against some well-handicapped horses.

‘‘We thought he was good enough to win that and it just didn’t quite click for him.

‘‘There’s another race for him at York, the Coral Sprint. That’s where he’ll go.’’ The Ogden-owned, Fahey-trained Tales Of Grimm bounced back to form at Newbury on Saturday.

The son of Distorted Humor ended a two-year barren spell with a neck verdict over French Navy at the Berkshire track and could soon be asked to supplement that victory.

He also has a date at the Autumn Horses In Training Sales at Tattersalls at the end of next month.

Simpson said: ‘‘We were delighted with the way he performed. He’s given us encouragement for pushing on with him and maybe running him over a little bit further.

‘‘It was very good and Ryan Moore gave him a peach of a ride. I don’t think the horse even knew he had a race.

‘‘We’ll try to consolidate on what we’ve got at the moment and we’ll find another race for him this season.

‘‘He is in the sales. He’s a horse that would appeal to Hong Kong and appeal to Dubai.

‘‘We’ll just look at a decent opportunity for him. The plan is to run him again. At the moment it’s finding the right race for him. We’re not against stepping him up in trip.’’
