DURHAM made steady inroads into the Derbyshire batting, leaving the visitors on 97 for five at tea in reply to 480 for nine declared.

Graham Onions took his first two wickets since he was injured in the third match of the season at Hove in May, and Chris Rushworth also grabbed his second with one ball left before the break.

Both had to return for second spells after Paul Coughlin retired with back trouble after four overs and Matthew Potts proved expensive.

Coughlin had looked the biggest threat, flattening Wayne Madsen's off and middle stumps before almost having Alex Hughes caught at short leg.

The left-handed openers put on 28 before they were parted in the 12th over when Luis Reece pushed forward and edged Onions to Michael Richardson.

Billy Godleman made two before groping forward to a ball from Rushworth which took out his off stump and Derbyshire were 41 for three when Coughlin splattered Madsen's timber.

Ben Slater and Hughes put on 33 before Onions returned to have Slater well caught at second slip by Tom Latham for 29. Then Rushworth nipped one back to pin Matt Critchley lbw for 12, leaving Hughes on 32 at the break.
