EXCELLENT bowling by Chris Rushworth and Paul Coughlin raised Durham's hopes of turning round their match at Chesterfield this morning.

But batting last after conceding a deficit of 67 is still likely to prove a tall order and they will not want to chase many more than 200.

Rushworth took two wickets and Coughlin followed his unbeaten 73 by sending Billy Godleman's off stump flying in reducing Derbyshire to 31 for three.

They had moved on to 60 for three at lunch, leading by 127.

On an overcast morning the left-arm swingers of Gurjit Sandhu earned two lbw verdicts from umpire Jeremy Lloyds to polish off Durham for 301. There was a run-out and nine wickets for players of Asian origin.

Six overs of spin at the start had allowed the ninth-wicket stand to progress to 90 but in the second over with the new ball Sandhu removed Barry McCarthy for 39.

It struck him a little high for a cast-iron decision, but there could be no doubt when another in-swinger pinned Rushworth in front. His five runs included an edged four, which earned the third batting point.

Coughlin made his highest score since his 85 on debut three years ago.

Rushworth then struck with the third ball of Derbyshire's second innings as left-hander Ben Slater played back and edged to Paul Collingwood at first slip.

A concerted appeal for caught behind with Godleman on one was turned down, clearly incensing the bolwer, Coughlin, after the same batsman twice stood his ground in the first innings.

The pace was ramped up and the home skipper was sent packing in spectacular style. Then Rushworth had Wayne Madsen caught behind, but a double change seemed to relieve some of the pressure for Luis Reece and Alex Hughes.
