DERBYSHIRE captain Billy Godleman successfully stood his ground when Durham's Graham Clark claimed a low catch at gully.

The left-hander was on ten when he pushed forward and edged Chris Rushworth for Cark to appear to get his fingertips under the ball.

As Durham celebrated Godleman decline to go and the umpires consulted before ruling in his favour.

He was on 23 out of 210 for four at tea after an unbroken stand of 71 with 20-year-old Matt Crictchley, who surprised the large contingent of Durham fans with the excellence of his batting.

In his first championship appearance of the season, he fully justified his elevation to No 5 by unveiling some high-class strokes in reaching 88.

Durham's only success of the afternoon came courtesy of a fine ball by Paul Coughlin, which Wayne Madsen edged to Ryan Pringle at second slip to depart for 54.

Pringle came on to bowl at 187 for four and found some turn and bounce with his second ball, which does not bode well for Durham against a team with three spinners.
