MARK WOOD has a personality simply unmatchable in the England dressing room, and Yorkshire all-rounder Tim Bresnan believes his bubbly spirit is worth its weight in gold.

The Ashington paceman broke through into the Test ranks in 2015, but it’s his off-field antics which have arguably caught the eye of onlookers.

His 95mph pace has been backed up by a temperament rarely seen, with his invisible horse and air guitar just some of the things that have lit up a pitch.

And Bresnan, who joined the Durham man in the UAE for the North v South series pre-season, believes that personality is not something should be quashed any time soon.

“He’s a character, he’s one of those guys who can run in and just a bowl a constant spell at 95mph, and there’s barely anyone in world cricket who can do that he’s got an extraordinary talent,” said Bresnan at the launch of Royal London One-Day Cup.

“He’s a real asset to the side, he brings the character too and that’s massively important. He is relentless with it so small doses are a must, but when he’s on top form he’s excellent.

“He’s the sort of man you need in a small time-frame and I had a wail of a time with him in North v South – but he wasn’t like that on his England debut that’s for sure!”

While raw pace has been the definite asset of Wood, it wasn’t always the easiest task for him to get control of his cricket.

But the talent was strong enough for him to break into the international arena despite playing just a handful of matches with his county.

But the gamble undoubtedly paid off, with only injury preventing him adding to his 20 international appearances to date.

His ability has certainly impressed Bresnan anyway, with the two set to face off in their Royal London One-Day Cup meeting on May 3.

He added: “He’s got the pace and everybody knows that, but Woody also has the skills to go with it which is so important.

“He burst onto the scene in Test cricket in the Ashes without many people seeing too much of him, without playing too many first-class matches and that seems to have worked out for us.

“He played one against Yorkshire and was quick, that was definitely evident, but he was also a little bit erratic at that point.

“Luckily for him he’s done well to counter that, was picked for the Ashes and the rest is history.”
