YORKSHIRE are inviting applications for the position of their new first-team coach as they look to replace Jason Gillespie.

Martyn Moxon, the White Rose county’s director of cricket, has revealed that the post has already received interest from a number of strong candidates.

But the ex-opening batsman wants to cast his net.

The club will be putting out an advertisement imminently, with a Yorkshire statement yesterday promising a “rigorous recruitment process”.

Two-time County Championship title winner Gillespie only left England last Friday after five years in charge at Headingley.

It is understood that Moxon has already spoken to England assistant coach Paul Farbrace about a possible return to the club, but to no avail.

Other names linked include former Yorkshire players Richard Dawson, Chris Silverwood and Anthony McGrath as well as Australian Brad Hodge.

Former Lancashire overseas batsman Hodge is currently Gillespie’s assistant coach at Big Bash team Adelaide Strikers, while he knows Adil Rashid and Rich Pyrah from their time Down Under last winter.

He expressed his interest in the post whilst speaking in the Australian media late last month.

Moxon said: “With Jason having only left for Australia at the back end of last week, we thought it important to take a period of time to take stock and reflect ahead of commencing any recruitment process.

“Such is the gravitas of the role, there was bound to be speculation around any potential candidates, and I thought it wise to update members and stakeholders at this point in time.

“The role has attracted a strong level of interest from a variety of promising candidates.

“But, as with any decision of this magnitude, it is imperative we make the correct call.

“We will spend the coming weeks assessing the interested applicants and will update members in due course.”
