DEPARTING duo Mark Stoneman and Scott Borthwick looked determined to sign off with a win as they took Durham within sight of the victory entering the final session of the season.

They were on 149 for one at tea, needing a further 147, with Stoneman on 81 and Borthwick 39.

Needing 28 to join his partner in passing 1,000 championship runs for the fourth successive season, Borthwick reached the milestone when he hit Liam Dawson through mid-wicket for four.

Stoneman and Keaton Jennings shared their 13th half-century opening stand of the season before Jennings fell lbw to Mason Crane for 25 with the total on 75.

The country's leading run scorer finished with 1,548 championship runs, 53 short of Michael Di Venuto's club record.

He fell the ball after Stoneman reached 50 off 53 deliveries shortly after surviving his one slight scare when he just cleared mid-off for his eighth four.

He throttled back against the spin threat of Dawson and Will Smith, who turned a few past the outside edge.
