DURHAM lost three wickets to the spinners in the afternoon session to reach tea on 152 for five in reply to 411.

Ben Stokes was unbeaten on 41, but his promising stand of 87 with Graham Clark ended when the Cumbrian looked unlucky to to fall in the 50s for the second successive innings.

Liam Dawson had been off the field with what looked like a hand injury, but on his return Clark was adjudged to have edged behind for 58.

It turned a lot, but Clark looked aghast to be given out, unlike Paul Collingwood, who walked immediately when he also edged Mason Crane to Lewis McManus to depart for nought.

Mark Stoneman failed to add to his lunchtime 28 before trying to lift Dawson over the top and miscuing to short mid-wicket, bringing in Stokes at 49 for three.

He and Clark played very responsibly, helped by Dawson's injury, which forced Will Smith to bowl his off-spin in tandem with Crane.

Much is expected of the young leg-spinner, but his first three overs were poor and cost 27.

Clark reached 50 off 94 balls with seven fours and will be sorry to see the season end, unlike his captain, who pushed half forward to the ball which removed him.
