DURHAM have recorded a dramatic 21-run win over Surrey to guarantee their place in Division One of the County Championship.
Having set Surrey 280 runs to win in their second innings, Durham were in a spot of bother when their opponents reached 222-5.
However, Ben Stokes claimed two wickets in the space of three balls to turn the game in Durham's favour, and while Surrey crept to 252-7, Stokes and Onions claimed three quick wickets to finish things.
Stokes had Gareth Batty caught by Keaton Jennings, whose 201 in the first innings ultimately proved crucial, before Onions dismissed Stuart Meaker and Mark Footitt to hand Durham victory.
The success means Durham maintain the longest run of any First Division side without suffering relegation.
