MARK Stoneman passed 1,000 first-class runs for the season in one of his all-too-brief cameos this afternoon.

His 38 off 32 balls launched Durham towards a tea score of 124 for two with Keaton Jennings departing for 40 and Scott Borthwick unbeaten on 38.

Jennings was badly missed on nought by Jake Lehmann at third slip of a very dischuffed Ryan Sidebottom, while Borthwick led a charmed life early on.

Stoneman cracked Jack Brooks to the off-side boundary three times in the fourth over, prompting the introduction of Tim Bresnan, who was hit for two fours in his first over.

The 12th half-century opening stand of the season came up in the tenth over and when Brooks returned at the rugby ground end Stoneman pulled his first ball in front of mid-wicket for four.

Two balls later, however, he edged a drive to be well caught by Adam Lyth to his right at second slip.

Borthwick went very close to being bowled by both Brooks and Bresnan before he had scored and on six he inside-edged Bresnan for four.

When Patterson came on for the 19th over Jennings unfurled two glorious drives wide of mid-off and followed up with a slightly streaky one, sliced behind square, as 14 came off the first four balls.

Remarkably, Patterson conceded only 14 runs in the rest of his ten-over spell after settling quickly into his usual economy.

He beat Jennings three times on 40 with a suspicion that the third instance brought an edge. The slips claimed a catch by Hodd, but it hadn't quite carried.

Not that it mattered as Jennings shaped to drive in Patterson's next over and gave Hodd a regulation catch.

Jack Burnham was on one at tea.
