YORKSHIRE have signed batsman Jake Lehmann, son of club legend Darren, as their new overseas player for the final six Specsavers County Championship matches of the season.

Left-hander Lehmann, 24, is due to leave Adelaide tomorrow ahead of an expected debut in Saturday’s Roses match at Emirates Old Trafford.

He played under Jason Gillespie for Adelaide Strikers over the winter, and he has been playing first-class cricket for Australia A against South Africa A in Queensland, a series which finished today.

Travis Head’s replacement will be ineligible for the county’s limited overs knockout matches, starting with Thursday’s NatWest T20 Blast quarter-final against Glamorgan at Cardiff.

Lehmann qualifies for an overseas spot by virtue of holding a British passport.

Yorkshire coach Gillespie said: “Getting a player of quality is always difficult at this stage of the season, but we’re delighted to secure the services of Jake.

“Things happened pretty quickly, triggered by Travis being called into the Australia squad. Hopefully he goes on to get a game.

“Cricket Australia were fantastic to deal with, coordinating with South Australia went fantastically well, and we were able to arrange for Jake to come over.

“He’s a great kid, gives the ball a whack and has shown good nous and awareness.

“Having worked with him at the Strikers, he’ll fit in to the changing room too, as all our players do.

“I just hope that he has a good time with us, enjoys himself and contributes to some good wins for Yorkshire.”

Since debuting for South Australia in first-class cricket last year, Lehmann has gone on to score 780 runs at an average of 41.50, including three hundreds and two fifties, in eleven matches.

He scored fifties in his first two matches against Victoria and Queensland in the Sheffield Shield at the end of the 2014/15 season before amassing a career best 205 in his third match, against Tasmania, last November.

His other two centuries came for his state in February, and he is regarded as one of Australia’s brightest young batting talents.

He has batted at five in Shield cricket and at four for Australia A against the South Africans this week, scoring 12 in a 10-wicket win.

Jake’s batting style has drawn comparisons with his father, Darren.

Lehmann senior earned legendary status during his time as Yorkshire’s overseas player between 1997 and 2006, scoring 8,871 runs in 88 first-class matches at an average of 68.76.

He hit 26 centuries with a career best 339 in his final match against Durham at Headingley. It remains the county’s second highest individual score.

Darren also won the Championship with Yorkshire in 2001, a feat Jake will obviously be looking to match.

Earlier this year, former Australia batsman Callum Ferguson, who has played with both men for South Australia, admitted: “Jake’s a ripping lad. He’s certainly a real jovial character around the dressing room like his old man.

“When he’s batting, he hits the ball through point like his old man. I’m not sure he’s quite got the deft touch just yet, but it’s certainly something that’s developing.

“I think he hits them a bit bigger straight down the ground.”

One of Jake’s Championship appearances will come against Hampshire, where his uncle Craig White is on the coaching staff. Lehmann senior married White’s sister, Andrea.
