DURHAM suffered a big blow at Southport this morning when skipper Paul Collingwood lasted only an hour on his comeback from a fractured thumb.

He left the field after diving in vain for a slip catch off Ben Stokes and is reported to have split the webbing between thumb and forefinger.

It wasn't costly in terms of runs as the one run Haseeb Hameed gained from the edge was his last one before he fell for ten.

He edged Paul Coughlin to Collingwood's replacement at first slip, Keaton Jennings, to leave Lancashire on 26 for two. But at lunch they had reached 81 without further loss.

Collingwood began the day by losing what could be a vital toss as batting last on a club ground is rarely ideal.

Southport is known for taking spin and Durham handed a championship debut to Adam Hickey in preference to Ryan Pringle.

The Darlington-born all-rounder came on at 51 for two after 23 overs but had to bowl at former South Africa Test batsman Alviro Petersen, who hit the first two balls of his second over for four and six.

Fresh from a T20 century last night, Petersen cruised to 42 at lunch with left-hander Luke Procter much more subdued in reaching 24 off 75 balls.

Chris Rushworth opened up with a spell of 7-5-2-1, having left-nader Tom Smith well caught low down at third slip by Stokes off the day's sixth ball.

Stokes, bowling for the first time since his knee operation, eased himself gently into a six-over spell which cost 17 runs.
