SCOTT Borthwick, tipped to make the England squad for the series against Pakistan, missed his chance to impress selector James Whitaker when he was run out for two at Chester-le-Street.

With Durham on 56 for one, Yorkshire might have been starting to question the wisdom of bowling first. But Borthwick's aberration gave them a timely lift.

He pushed Steve Patterson to Andrew Gale's right at mid-off and tried to scamper what always looked a risky single. After veering past the bowler, Steve Patterson, his dive for the crease failed to beat Gale's direct hit following a diving stop.

After the start was delayed by five minutes more drizzle arrived after one over, causing a further half hour's interruption.

But as the skies cleared Mark Stoneman prospered to reach 45 at lunch, when Durham were 72 for two.

Keaton Jennings contributed 20 to an opening stand of 49 before offering no stroke and losing his off stump to Josh Shaw's seventh ball.

Yorkshire handed a first-class debut to 22-year-old Ben Coad, who shared the new ball with Tim Bresnan.
