JAMES WEIGHELL will return to action as captain of Durham in the three-day Second XI Championship match against Derbyshire starting at Darlington today.

The Stokesley all-rounder has played in the last three Specsavers County Championship games but was unable to bowl because of an Achilles problem in the second innings at Trent Bridge two weeks ago.

With other seamers carrying injuries, and Barry McCarthy and Stuart Poynter away with Ireland, Durham are handing a trial to former Middlesex left-arm seamer Gurjit Sandhu. Now 24, he made the first of his five first-class appearancers aged 19.

Jarvis Clay, a 27-year-old wicketkeeper from Derby, is also included after being among the runs for Northumberland recently. He is given a chance in Poynter's absence with both Michael Richardson and Phil Mustard in the senior squad for tomorrow's home match against Nottinghamshire in the Royal London Cup.

Academy boys Sameet Brar, Chris McBride and Paul Braithwaite are also in the second team, whose two Twenty20 matches against Derbyshire at Emirates Riverside yesterday were washed out.
