DURHAM had to overcome the shock of losing Chris Rushworth to injury for the first time for three years before making a solid start in their home match against Lancashire.

They chose to bat and an unbroken stand of 68 between Scott Borthwick and Jack Burnham too them to 114 for two at lunch, both wickets going to Tom Bailey in an impressive eight-over spell.

Rushworth suffered a hip injury in training, so Durham were spared the choice between James Weighell and Barry McCarthy as Ben Stokes' replacement.

Bailey replaced Jimmy Anderson for Lancashire and induced edged catches from both openers.

Mark Stoneman scored the first 24 runs before Keaton Jennings almost ran him out scampering his only run.

Stoneman made 31 before he shaped to drive a ball swinging into him through mid-on and edged to Karl Brown at second slip.

Borthwick looked in excellent form in reaching 47, while the fearless Burnham rode his luck in his unbeaten 35.
