NO play was possible on the third day of Durham's match against Middlesex at chilly Chester-le-Street.

Following heavy flurries of snow in the morning there were rain showers in the afternoon and all hope was abandoned after a 4pm pitch inspection.

With the forecast also poor for tomorrow, the weather seems certain to spoil what might have been an excellent four-day match at a venue notorious for three-day finishes.

England selector James Whitaker had a wasted trip from Edgbaston. He would have hoped to watch Steven Finn bowling at Mark Stoneman, who is unbeaten on 139. Durham are 295 for four in reply to 389.
