DURHAM were in a hurry to build on a first innings lead of 79 as they raced to 109 for one at tea against Somerset.

They may have half an eye on tomorrow's weather forecast, but they were actually doing no more than taking advantage of some dreadful bowling.

The first three overs of their second innings yielded 32 runs, Lewis Gregory conceding 24 in two, and it took the introduction of Roleof Van Der Merwe's left-arm spin to induce a rash stroke from Mark Stoneman.

With 66 on the board he had pulled the first ball of the 11th over for six off Tim Groenewald, but with only two more runs added he drove a catch straight to Marcus Trescothick at short mid-wicket.

Stoneman stalked off after making a run-a-ball 41, but Keaton Jennings progressed to 50 off 63 balls, compared with the 130 it took him in the first innings.

He was on 55 at tea with Scott Borthwick on a relatively restrained nine.

It was obvious straight after lunch that it was a pleasant afternoon for batting as Somerset's ninth-wicket pair of Peter Trego and Gregory scored freely in taking their stand to 66.

There were no easy pickings as Graham Onions and Chris Rushworth strove to wrap up the innings and Rushworth finally gained his third lbw verdict to remove Gregory for 27.

When Brydon Carse returned for a second spell Trego slogged his first ball to mid-on to depart for 45 and Somerset were all out for 177.
