YORKSHIRE lost three further wickets but still made very good progress on the second afternoon of their LV= Division One match against Somerset at Headingley.

Andrew Gale’s batsmen scored 126 runs to finish the session on 362-7, and Jonny Bairstow was 76 not out when the players came in for tea, having reached a thousand Championship runs for the season in only his 13th innings.

The session had begun badly for Yorkshire when Steve Patterson was caught at the wicket by Ronchi for 44 off Craig Overton’s third ball after the resumption. Aaron Finch and Bairstow then added 22 in ten overs against a disciplined Somerset attack before Finch was leg before to Overton for 13.

Tim Bresnan’s seventh-wicket stand with Bairstow yielded another 46 runs but was ended when Bresnan chopped the ball on to his stumps from Groenewald when he had made 18.

All this time Bairstow had been batting with increasing confidence and he reached his 50 in confident style off the 80th ball he had received when he hit Leach for a straight six. A couple more boundaries followed in the same over while at the other end James Middlebrook offered stout support.

The pair’s 50 stand came up off 48 balls and Middlebrook was 23 not out at tea by which time Yorkshire’s lead stood at 252.
