DURHAM had no answer to the in-form Australian, Michael Klinger, as he plundered an unbeaten 135 off 114 balls for Gloucestershire at Bristol.

The absence of Paul Collingwood, who was ruled out after waking up with a stiff neck, left a big hole in the Durham team but his bowling replacement, Keaton Jennings, did a good job.

So did Scott Borthwick, who bowled the last five overs from one end and took three for 26.

For the rest it was a nightmare as the hosts amassed 289 for seven in a game reduced to 41 overs a side after the second of three breaks.

Rarely can Durham have been so grateful for rain than in the third interruption as 33 had come off the previous 16 balls.

But the carnage continued on the resumption as 106 runs were hammered off nine overs from the 22nd. At that point Borthwick came on and the rate dropped with 80 coming off the last ten.

Given that the forecast was for the day to improve, it was a surprise that Klinger chose to bat. But he proceeded to justify his decision in imperious fashion, hitting 12 fours and five sixes. He had to send for a runner on 94, but his injury did little to inhibit his powerful striking.

It doesn't say much for the strength of Gloucestershire's batting that they have 39-year-old former England wicketkeeper Geraint Jones at No 4.

He went in at 30 for two after eight overs, when Gareth Roderick fell to the second ball on the resumption following the second shower, clipping Chris Rushworth to mid-wicket.

Jones scratched around to reach 20 off 41 balls before suddenly going berserk when Jennings was taken off, despite having bowled a maiden to the ex-Kent man in conceding only 31 off seven overs.

Jones' acceleration took him to 54 off 60 balls before he was bowled having a big heave at Ryan Pringle.

It was a rare moment of joy for the off-spinner, who conceded 61 in six overs. The quicker bowlers, Rushworth, John Hastings and Usman Arshad went for 163 off 23 between them, not helped by some lapses in the field.

Benny Howell hit three sixes, two in one Arshad over, in making 45 off 24 balls.
