IT was a disappointing morning for Durham after choosing to bat at a sunny Ageas Bowl. Scott Borthwick's exit for 49 in the over before lunch left them on 91 for four.

Graham Clark was handed his first-class debut at the expense of Keaton Jennings and saw Mark Stoneman fall lbw to the fifth ball from Jackson Bird before Borthwick was dropped at second slip on nought.

Clark made eight, one of his two fours coming off the edge, before left-armer James Tomlinson had him lbw.

Borthwick dominated the scoring in a 45-run partnership with Paul Collingwood, who scored eight before driving a catch to mid-off .

That gave Tomlinson a second wicket but he was pulled for six by Michael Richardson, who was on 17 at lunch.

Hampshire turned to spin at both ends with Dawson, recalled from a loan spell at Essex, being joined by 18-year-old leg-spinner Mason Crane.

Dawson commanded respect, unlike the day five years ago when Ben Stokes hit him for five successive sixes.

Borthwick was attempting a fierce pull when he fell lbw to Dawson, which will bring in Gordon Muchall after lunch.
