CHRIS Woakes, making his first appearance of the season for Warwickshire, took three for three in ten balls against Durham at Chester-le-Street this morning.

It was just as well for the hosts that they had a 116-run first innings lead as they slumped to nine for four before reaching lunch on 34 for five.

Durham skipper Paul Collingwood again risked censure by looking shocked to be given out lbw for the second time in the match.

He played forward to Woakes and the ball brushed his pad on the way through to the wicketkeeper. He may have thought he had been given caught behind by umpire Graham Lloyd.

Bowling well in helpful conditions, Woakes had left-handers Mark Stoneman and Scott Borthwick caught behind when pushing forward.

Rikki Clarke took the other two wickets, knocking out Keaton Jennings' off and middle stumps and having Michael Richardson brilliantly caught at third slip by Laurie Evans.

Richardson had tried to counter-attack, pulling Woakes for six on his way to 21.

Chris Rushworth earlier completed his fifth five-wicket haul of the season. With four already in the bag, he had Woakes caught at second slip to finish with five for 43 as the visitors were dismissed for 198.

Durham took 11 overs to claim the three remaining Warwickshire wickets for the addition of 31 runs.

Jeetan Patel did not hang around. After John Hastings finished his uncompleted over he was replaced by Graham Onions, whose first ball of the day gave him his only wicket. Patel drove well wide of off stump and edged to first slip.

Woakes, playing back defensively, went in the next over but Tom Milnes had little trouble making 12 not out before Oliver Hannon-Dalby became the seventh lbw victim of the innings.

He was the sixth given out by David Millns, giving left-armer Jamie Harrison his one wicket.
