CONDITIONS clearly favoured the bowlers on a cloudy morning at Chester-le-Street as Somerset declined from their overnight 147 for four to 225 all out. But a lead of 36 looked useful as they quickly removed Keaton Jennings, leaving Durham on ten for one at lunch.

Johann Myburgh, who resumed on 57, left as many balls as possible in the first three overs but when forced to play at one by John Hastings he edged it to wicketkeeper Michael Richardson.

Jim Allenby fell for 20 when he edged a drive to Paul Collingwood at first slip to give Chris Rushworth his fourth wicket.

Peter Trego and Lewis Gregory showed rare restraint in adding 30 before departing to successive balls. Paul Coughlin clung on to a sharp return catch offered by Trego's leading edge and off the first ball of the next over Gregory drove at John Hastings and edged high to Collingwood's left.

The Durham captain showed remarkable reflexes and agility for a 39-year-old to to hold a leaping catch.

Craig Overton, who had bounced the burly Hastings and given him a lengthy glare the previous day, copped similar treatment, although it cost Durham as four byes flew over the wicketkeeper's head.

Overton made 12 before driving Coughlin to mid-on, then Tim Groenewald opened up by driving the same bowler for a straight six.

Graham Onions, who had been off the field through illness yesterday, finally came on to bowl at 12.30 and Groenewald launched his fifth ball high to mid-wicket, where Hastings hung on to the swirling chance. Alex Barrow was left unbeaten on ten. Jennings, top scorer with 49 in Durham's first innings, departed for one in the second over, playing on as a ball from Groenewald kept low.
