DURHAM left it too late to start testing Jonathan Trott with a short-pitched barrage from John Hastings and at lunch he had reached 42 out of 97 for two.

After Graham Onions and Chris Rushworth took a wicket each to reduce Warwickshire to 18 for two after they chose to bat Durham gave Trott an easy start.

He hit two of the first three balls he faced for four and his only alarm in coasting to 30 came when Paul Coughlin had a huge appeal for caught behind turned down.

That was in an over in which he was also driven in front of mid-wicket for two fours, but he generally bowled well after coming in for Mark Wood.

As in the last match, Onions again struggled, conceding 12 in his first seven balls. But in his third over Varun Chopra followed a ball wide of off stump and tried too late to withdraw his bat, edging to Phil Mustard.

Rushworth, bowling round the wicket to left-hander Will Porterfield, had one big lbw shout turned down before what looked an identical one was given.

Rushworth also troubled opener Ian Westwood, who had played only two aggressive shots all morning until he drove and pulled two fours off Rushworth in the last over before lunch to reach 34.

He had made 11 off 50 balls when he picked up Hastings for six behind square and miscued pull off Paul Collingwood, also just before the break, carried for four.

Trott had reached 30 before Hastings tried to pepper him, but apart from missing one attempted hook he coped comfortably.
