YORKSHIRE head coach Jason Gillespie was yesterday denied the opportunity to answer questions on his future as speculation regarding a job with England intensifies.

New ECB director of cricket Andrew Strauss named Gillespie as a candidate in the search for a replacement for sacked head coach Peter Moores.

And though Yorkshire director of cricket Martyn Moxon revealed the former Australia seamer wanted to respond to recent rumours, he confirmed the club had still not received any official approach for Gillespie.

“There hasn’t (been an approach). We’ve got no comment until something happens. At the moment there is what Andrew said and nothing more at the minute,” he said.

“The fact is Jason is going to have answer questions, but rather than him standing here and giving no comment, it’s better to not say anything until we’ve got something official.

“If and when Andrew Strauss has officially spoken to him, we’ll be the first ones to let you know and you can do a press conference with him.

“At the moment since he’s got nothing concrete to tell you there’s no point him being here.”

Gillespie turned down the chance to coach South Australia last week, though it is understood he has an international job release clause in the contract he recently signed with Big Bash outfit Adelaide Strikers.

And Moxon did admit Yorkshire had a contingency plan in place should Gillespie leave for a role with the national team.

“Because of all the speculation we’ve had discussions and we’ve got to plan just in case. From a personal point of view I hope that plan doesn’t have to come into operation but we’ll wait and see.”

On the pitch, Yorkshire secured their second County Championship victory of the season as they sealed a 305-run victory over Hampshire.

Adil Rashid finished with figures of 4-48 as the Tykes bowled the visitors out for 143 despite a battling 64 not out from Will Smith.

Smith was given a reprieve on 20 as Jack Leaning failed to hold onto a difficult low catch off the bowling of Jack Brooks, but he was unable to guide Hampshire to a draw as they fell well short of their 449 victory target.

Nightwatchman James Tomlinson was the first to fall as he was bowled by Rashid before Sean Ervine edged Tim Bresnan through to Jonny Bairstow.

That brought Lewis McManus to the crease, and along with Smith he frustrated the Tykes bowlers as they added 56 for the seventh wicket.

McManus, who was making his first-class debut, eventually fell for 28 to Will Rhodes, and from there Yorkshire moved quickly to wrap up victory.

Gareth Berg swept Rashid straight to Brooks at backward square-leg before Andre Adams edged to Bresnan at slip off the very next delivery.

Fidel Edwards survived the hat-trick ball, but could not hold out with Smith as the West Indian edged Steven Patterson to Alex Lees early in the afternoon session.

Victroy moves Yorkshire up to third in the Championship table having picked up 23 points, with Middlesex the early leaders ahead of Durham.
