DURHAM, on 240-4, needed only 21 to win when the third shower of the day at Chester-le-Street prompted an early tea.

Led by a career-best 66 from nightwatchman Mark Wood, they were coasting to their third win in four games on a pitch which had flattened.

On a day when nothing went right for Nottinghamshire, Wood put on 116 for the second wicket with Keaton Jennings, who made 61 before he was caught at gully off Luke Wood.

Mark Wood was finally bowled by Harry Gurney, but with victory in sight Scott Borthwick and Michael Richardson took a positive approach in a stand of 86 in 15 overs.

Borthwick, on 20, survived a chance low to Brendan Taylor's right hand at first slip off Gurney and went on to make a fluent 51 before he was lbw trying to sweep the first ball of Samit Patel's second over.

Richardson was on 46 when the rain arrived.
