DURHAM got through the morning without losing a wicket in their pursuit of 261 to beat Nottinghamshire at Chester-le-Street, reaching 107 for one at lunch.

In a repeat of the third morning at Lord's last week, Keaton Jennings found solid support from a nightwatchman. But this time it was Mark Wood rather than Chris Rushworth.

The only real chance of a breakthrough came eight minutes before lunch when Wood, on 32, edged Steve Mullaney low to Samit Patel at second slip. Patel intially claimed the catch, but there was no obvious contention when Wood stood his ground and was given not out.

Wood has always been able to handle a bat, but had a top score of 20 not out in 11 innings last season. He enjoyed a few slices of fortune this morning, including an edge over the slips off Vernon Philander, but generally looked assured in reaching 47.

The pitch appears to have flattened following the fall of 18 wickets yesterday, with very little getting past the bat.

Resuming on seven out of 15 for one, Jennings began with three fours in the first over. He clipped Philander's first ball in front of square leg, cut the second and off-drove the fifth.

Philander had a big appeal for lbw against Wood turned down but after bowling four overs he made way for Brett Hutton, while Harry Gurney replaced Luke Wood.

The score had reached 49 when a shower caused a 14-minute delay and on the resumption Wood sliced Gurney wide of gully for four.

Jennings would be mindful that it was after the nightwatchman got out at Lord's that Durham's troubles began, sparking the fall of 16 wickets for 136 runs in that match, followed by their first innings .

But while Jennings got out just before the break at Lord's, this time he and Wood took 15 off the final over.

Nottinghamshire brought on Patel and Jennings drove his first ball wide of mid-on for his eighth four to reach 50 off 102 balls. He then took a single before Wood pulled a six and inside edged a four.
