MARK Stoneman completed his 1,000 championship runs, only to depart ten minutes before lunch as Durham slid towards a three-day defeat.

After trailing by 228 in the first innings they went into the interval on 104 for three, despite surviving the threat of Keith Barker.

Stoneman countered Durham’s nemesis by batting well out of his crease and with the help of an edged four took ten off the first over.

But in the second over Keaton Jennings fell to the fourth ball, pushing forward and edging Oliver Hannon-Dalby to second slip. It was the left-hander’s fourth duck in his last five innings.

The other two wickets fell to the off-spin of Jeetan Patel, who will expect to clean up this afternoon.

Scott Borthwick had made 15 when he edged Patel through the slips for four, but his next edge was held by Rikki Clarke.

Stoneman had played very fluently but also struggled against the spinner. A streaky four took him to the 41 he needed for 1,000, but he added only four more before he also edged to slip.

Gordon Muchall was off the mark first ball with an edged four off Patel, then hit three well-timed boundaries and one streaky one off successive balls from Hannon-Dalby in the last over before lunch to reach 28.

Durham took 30 minutes to wrap up the Warwickshire innings after the hosts resumed on 413 for eight.

Chris Rushworth finished with six for 100 when he had Hannon-Dalby caught behind, then Varun Aaron picked up his second wicket when Patel slashed a sharp chance to Borthwick at slip to depart for 45 with the total on 429.
