JONNY BAIRSTOW is hoping Yorkshire’s LV= County Championship title triumph can be the first of many for a group of players primed for long-term success.

Bairstow, an Ashes winner with England last summer, basked in the glory of his first piece of silverware with his home county on Friday after the White Rose had beaten Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

The 25-year-old wicketkeeper batsman was pictured celebrating with his mother, Janet, in emotional scenes before admitting that this season’s glory is “something I will treasure for the rest of my life”.

Bairstow is one of a whole host of twenty somethings in Yorkshire’s squad. He has been in the club’s system since he was 11, graduating through the Academy, the second team and into the firsts.

There are a number of others set to do the same, with Bairstow highlighting batsman Jack Leaning, 20, fast bowler Matthew Fisher, 16 and left-arm spinner Karl Carver, 18, as examples.

“It’s going to be tough, we know that,” said Bairstow.

“But, if this group of players stays together, there’s no reason why we can’t (have more success).

“There’s an exciting few years for Yorkshire, many years hopefully. If you look at the Academy and the under 19s, we have people like Matty Fisher coming through. I think that shows the strength in depth and the strength in our Academy.

“Look at Jack Leaning in his first year, to come in and play how he has is absolutely exceptional. Everyone is absolutely delighted with the way he has played.

“You have people in the Academy who have represented the first team. Fisher represented the first team aged 15.

“That shows the belief we have within the management and the first team for people to go straight in and fit in. Karl Carver came in and took three wickets on debut against Warwickshire.

They’re ready when they come in.

“Over the years that is something we’ve prided ourself on, and you look around at the core of the team now and you have Lyth at 26, Lees is 21, Ballance is 24 or 25, Rooty is 23, I’m 25, Adil is 26.

It’s unbelievable.

“Since Jack Brooks and Liam Plunkett, who is Yorkshire born, have come to the squad, they have been fantastic.

“For Brooksy to have taken 60 wickets this year is a ridiculous effort for any fast bowler. It’s no mean feat.

Brooksy has fitted in like a Yorkie. He’s got an accent and everything!”

Bairstow has enjoyed an impressive campaign, especially in four-day cricket even though he missed the first three games through injury.

He has scored 590 runs at 49.16, including one hundred and four fifties, and has taken 36 catches and two stumpings.

He is currently ranked as the fifth best keeper in Division One, although he has played fewer matches than those above him.

“I’ve absolutely loved it,” he added. “It’s been fantastic to have a full year of cricket behind me after breaking my finger in pre-season.

“It’s a special club. To come through from 11-years-old at the Academy and progress through the first team, it’s very special.

“Everyone knows, growing up, the history of the club, what the White Rose means to you.’’
