DURHAM again lost a wicket in the final over before a break, but as Paul Collingwood had made an invaluable 58 the lead had been stretched to 319 with three wickets standing.

Gordon Muchall is unbeaten on 45, his second highest championship score of the season behind his 158 not out at Trent Bridge and the total is 218 for seven.

Having come in to face the new ball in the first innings, this time he got to the crease when it was 53 overs old. But on what has remained a grey day, the ball was still swinging, particularly for Toby Roland-Jones.

He bowled some seriously good balls, having Collingwood missed at second slip by Dawid Malan on 14 and beating both batsmen several times.

After battling through the morning, Scott Borthwick fell to the first ball he faced after lunch, becoming Tim Murtagh’s tenth victim of the match when he edged to John Simpson for 30.

Durham were rocking on 139 for six when Roland-Jones had Ben Stokes lbw for 15, but Collingwood wasted no opportunities to score, twice clearing the short leg-side boundary while Muchall played himself in.

Once Muchall had square driven Neil Dexter for four he began to dominate, but after two glorious cover drives he became a little too keen to repeat them and a couple of edged fours resulted.

It was strange to see the hapless Ollie Rayner come on to turn his off breaks into two right-handers with the short boundary on the leg side.

Collingwood duly planted him over the rope at mid-wicket to reach 50 off 70 balls before inside edging Steven Finn to give Simpson his fourth catch of the innings.
