JASON GILLESPIE says winning an LV= County Championship title as coach of Yorkshire would rank alongside his many achievements as an Australian fast bowler.

Gillespie takes his White Rose side to Trent Bridge today (10.30am) knowing that a win over second-placed Nottinghamshire in their penultimate match would seal a first four-day crown since 2001.

A draw might even be enough given they have a 26-point cushion at the top.

The 39-year-old is in his third season in charge at Headingley, a period in which he has constantly been linked with international jobs, be it with either Australia or England.

It is no surprise, however, given the job he has done with Yorkshire.

He led them to the T20 Final, the Champions League and Championship promotion in his first season, challenged for the Division One title in his second and looks like winning it in his third.

In the 46 Championship matches under his guidance, Yorkshire have only lost three.

So it will be music to the ears of all Yorkshire fans to hear that ‘Dizzy’ is planning to remain at the county for some time yet as they look to build on their expected success this season.

“I loved playing, don’t get me wrong. It was absolutely brilliant. But I’ve moved on from playing,” said Gillespie, who took 259 wickets in 71 Tests for the great Australia side from the mid-nineties through to the mid-noughties.

“I’ve got some wonderful memories of playing for a number of different teams and having success. Now I’ve got different goals and different dreams.

“Being a coach of a team that produces England cricketers and has had some success, it would be right up there. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

And, regarding his future, he continued: “I’ve got a young family, and my kids are at a really good school in North Leeds. We’ve got a nice house, my daughter was born here, and we enjoy life in England.

“Yorkshire’s a wonderful county, we enjoy living in Leeds, and we love the people.

It’s a really nice place to live.

“I just love my job. I’m in my dream job really. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Gillespie, who has confirmed Joe Root as Yorkshire’s captain for the rest of the season, will be without Andrew Gale through suspension.

It will be the second time this season Root has stood in as captain, with Gale dropping himself against Middlesex at Lord’s in April - Yorkshire’s only defeat.

“I see that as a massively important moment in the season,” added Gillespie.

“Galey felt that Lees and Lyth were going to play a big part in our season.
