DURHAM succumbed to the leg spin of Adil Rashid this afternoon as they failed to support skipper Paul Collingwood. He was on 61 out of 231 for eight at tea, with 52 still needed to avoid the follow on.

Rashid took all three wickets to fall in the session, although Ryan Sidebottom could consider himself unlucky not to gain at least one lbw verdict during a five-over spell.

He has conceded only 17 runs in 14 overs in the innings and was not impressed with Richard Illingworth turning down his appeal with Phil Mustard on 17.

Not that it was costly as the wicketkeeper did not add to his score. He had survived a sharp chance to Jack Leaning at third slip off Jack Brooks on three and never looked secure during a stand of 51.

Mustard finally turned a catch tamely into the hands of Leaning at short leg, then John Hastings looked all at sea against Rashid.

A couple of wafts earned him three runs before he pushed forward to a ball which bounced more than he expected and lobbed off the shoulder of the bat to slip.

Paul Coughlin was equally uncertain and after surviving a confident lbw appeal when shouldering arms to a googly there was an air of desperation about the six he hit over long-on to get off the mark. Trying something similar, he holed out at deep mid-on for 11.

Collingwood would have been run out on ten and 44 had the shies hit the stumps when he risked singles to mid-on. Otherwise he was at his obdurate best and reached 50 off 89 balls when he ran Brooks to third man for his fifth four.

Mark Wood was with him on 12 at tea, having just hit two Rashid long hops for four.
