Darlington 5 Consett 0 - match report: http://bit.ly/St5xOD

5:33pm

GAME OVER. South Africa win by seven wickets after finishing with a single courtesy of Jaques Kallis to reach 119-3 with one over to spare.

Kallis went on to reach 48 not out from 44 balls along with Jean-Paul Duminy who finished with 47 - a partnership of 90 from 91 deliveries.

A disappointing afternoon following a frustrating summer for England, who need to improve in the final two matches of the NatWest Series to build up confidence ahead of the World Cup.

5:21pm

After 16.3 overs South Africa are 100-3 - at the same stage England were 87-7.

Safe to say that AB de Villiers is the skipper going to taste success in the first of these threeTwenty20 NatWest Series internationals.

5:16pm

Official crowd came through at the Durham Emirates ICG of 8,826.

Disappointing for an England international in September. Plenty to pay for, plenty games, other sports, but still ...

Ashes next August is already a sell-out, by the way.

5:11pm

Kieswetter almost took one in the head there from Bairstow's throw. The wicket keeper's duck just prevented the ball from bouncing straight off his unprotected head.

He's smiling now, but it's fair to say he wouldn't have been!

5:09pm

Graeme Swann has finished his spell of four overs without a wicket and at a cost of 16 runs.

Finn, meanwhile, has also stopped and took a wicket for 22 runs.

South Africa have seven wickets left and require 32 runs off 36 balls.

4:57pm

FT: Hartlepool 1 Carlisle 2. last 15 minutes the difference, Pools were in control, the n conceded, had a man sent off, a defender off injured and never looked comfortable from it.

4:52pm

4:52pm

4:52pm

FT : Darlington 5 Consett 0: Darlington return to the top of the table thanks to goals from Amar Purewal (15 seconds), David Dowson (37 minutes and 39), Chris Emms (50) and Shaun Reay (81).

4:42pm

Considering England's total was the third worst T20 they have recorded, worth pointing out that that up to the end of the sixth over they are doing better than the tourists.

England were 40/1 at the end of the power play while at the same stage South Africa are 40/3.

It was at this point Kieswetter departed and things deteriorated for England.

4:42pm

GOAL: Matty Robson, ex Hartlepool , scores to put Carlisle in front, low angled shot across Flinders . Pools 1-2 Carlisle

4:39pm

GOAL: Shaun Reay makes it 5-0 in the 81st minute.

4:35pm

All going on at Hartlepool .

It's 1-1 after Cadamarteri levelled for Carlisle , tapping in from close range after a free kick was parried by Flinders. That was 75 mins.

On 76, Austin was sent-off - second booking for a tug on Symington. And Hartley is going off injured with Baldwin coming on.

4:34pm

Game has died a death since Chris Emms made it 4-0 to Darlington . Both teams are going through the motions. Adam Nicholls has just tried his luck from 20 yards, but the effort sailed wide of the Consett goal. 15 minutes to play.

4:31pm

4:30pm

WICKET: 29/3 de Villiers c Kieswetter b Derbach 10

De Villiers drove without moving his feet and the edge fell kindly for Kieswetter to hold from Dernbach's length ball.

Looking decent for England at this stage, as Jean-Paul Duminy walks up.

4:26pm

Attendance at Darlington v Consett is 1,287, that’s around 300 less than for the Dunston home game a week last Friday evening. The 4-1 defeat to Guisborough on Wednesday has obviously had an impact on some of the floating fans. By contrast, Gateshead versus Dartford today has attracted 758.

4:23pm

WICKET: South Africa 14/2 du Plessis lbw b Finn 4

Steven Finn justified his inclusion despite a back problem by sending du Plessis back to the pavillion after just three balls.

In comes the skipper ... AB de Villiers

4:21pm

There’ll be no hat-trick for David Dowson today as he’s been replaced by Shaun Reay. Darlington have now made all their substitutions with Steven Johnson and Adam Clough on for Darren Richardson and Amar Purewal.
Consett have replaced left-winger Harrison Davies with number 17....who isn’t on the team sheet.
63 minutes gone at Heritage Park, still 4-0 to Darlington.

4:19pm

WICKET: South Africa 9/1 Levi c Swann b Dernbach 8

A decent length ball from Derbach was chopped to slip and caught well by Swann.

Faf du Plessis has moved in for the tourists and England must build on that breakthrough.

4:17pm

Update from Holland. Update from Holland!

Graeme Storm has slipped up, slightly.

His strong lead has been erased today and, despite a one under third round, he will go in to the final round tomorrow tied for the lead.

The Hartlepool golfer suffered his first bogeys of the KLM Open today by bogeying the 13th and 14th which ensured those below him could catch him.

Now Storm sits level with Pablo Larrazabal, Scott Jamieson and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano on 12 under ahead of the action tomorrow.

Sweden's Peter Hanson is a shot further back, so all to play for still for Storm.

4:16pm

GOAL: Darlington go 4-0 up against Consett in the 50th minute and what a goal it was, achip by Chris Emms following a pass by Adam Nicholls at the end of a counter-attack. Emms had tie and pace to take a touch, but he took the shot first time and the ball dropped sweetly into the net from 18 yards.

Bit of a delay in getting this update to you. Gremlins in the system perhaps.

4:16pm

Jervis replaced for Carlisle after that miss. No suprise there like. Looks a bit devastated in the dug out. He won't sleep tonight.

4:12pm

Back out at the Emirates ICG.

Steven Finn to have first over, with Richard Levi and Jacques Kallis up first for South Africa.

This should be a routine win for South Africa now, but they need a good start from their openers.

4:10pm

4:10pm

One of the greatest misses of all. Carlisle striker Jake Jervis goes around Hartlepool keeper Scott Flinders on the edge of the area, faced with empty net. He put the ball in the away end. Shocker. The stuff DVDs are made of.

3:59pm

ENGLAND'S innings over. They finish 118-7 which gives South Africa every chance of winning this first match of the series.

Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann both finished on 18 not out  to try to improve a poor total by getting the best partnership score of the afternoon on 33.

But South Africa, with Johan Botha's two for 19 and two catches leading the way, should have enough to wrap this up after the interval.

3:56pm

3:47pm

HALF-TIME : Darlington 3 Consett 0. Quakers are coasting against Consett. Goals from Amar Purewal (3 minutes), David Dowson (37 and 39).

3:47pm

HT: Hartlepool 1 Carlisle 0 - decent game, lively, pacy, both teams pressing. No grumbles with the performance or the scoreline.

3:46pm

Just before the break, a rare chance for Consett . Harrison Davies' corner met the towering presence of David Scorer, but the Consett defender could not live up to his name as his header was deflected wide for another corner, this time cleared by Darlington .

3:41pm

GOAL: Darlington now 3-0 up against Consett, again through David Dowson. Adam Nicholls attempted to work an opening in the centre of Consett’s penalty area and although he lost possession, the ball fell kindly to Dowson to blast home. Two goals inside three minutes.

3:41pm

GOAL: Hartlepool one up, James Poole 40 mins. Pacy charge into the area, angled ball and confidently clipped in. Deserved that for a very bright half from the striker.

3:40pm

WICKET: 85/7 Patel c Kallis b Peterson 4

Attempted to strike Peterson's delivery down the ground but Kallis made an incredible catch with inches to spare to send the England man packing.

Graeme Swann enters the field.

3:38pm

GOAL: David Dowson makes it 2-0 to Darlington. He collided with keeper Peter Jameson on the edge of the penalty area, but knocked the ball into the unguarded net after collecting a long pass from the Darlington defence.

3:36pm

Almost a Consett own goal. Trickery on the left by Darlington’s Adam Nicholls led to a whipped in cross to the far post where left-back Ian Davidson attempted a chest-pass to keeper Peter Jameson that bounced inches wide of the post, conceding a corner in the process. Ten minutes until half-time, it remains 1-0 to Darlington who look good for a second goal.

3:35pm

Not a derby game this - but it's a bit lively. Hartlepool have had half a dozen chances , Carlisle just had a couple. Two bookings, one for each. Pools are better than they were against Scunthorpe last time out.

Poole lively for Poole, with Berrett the pick of the visitors bunch.

3:31pm

WICKET: England 80/6 Bairstow c Botha b Morkel 15

Another one down. Now England have plenty work to do. This time Bairstow done by the fielding of Botha, who caught his slog from Morkel to long on with ease.

In comes captain fantastic, well we will see, Stuart Broad.

3:30pm

Chances for both teams just now, both involving Darlington’s muscular midfielder Leon Scott. He first charged through the middle, brushing off the attentions of a couple of blue-shirted Consett defenders, before dragging an effort horribly wide.
Within 60 seconds his poor pass was seized upon by Consett striker Michael Mackay who laid the ball off to strike-partner Lewis Teasdale, but his effort ended up in Sainsbury’s car park.
Half an hour gone, still 1-0 to Darlington.

3:26pm

WICKET: England 76/5 Buttler b Peterson 6

This time Peterson's delivery changed direction and caught out Buttler, who turned to see his stumps gone!

In comes Samit Patel.

3:24pm

22 minutes gone at Heritage Park and Darlington remain 1-0 up, though it’s not been entirely one-way traffic. Consett created an opportunity up the left that led to new Darlington defender Joe Tait blocking a shot from Michael Mackay, the former Hartlepool United striker.

But there’s been more action in Consett’s goalmouth. Consett captain Craig Robson blocked a shot from Adam Nicholls, who had earlier caused alarm for the visitors when he ghosted past Luke Sullivan and Calvin Smith, but keeper Peter Jameson saved the winger’s effort.

3:20pm

On the live blog we have golf, cricket, and football. It's like Grandstand. Which makes us all Des Lynam. Tache-tastic.

3:19pm

Larrazabal and Jamieson just one shot behind Graeme Storm now, the Hartlepool golfer is -1 for the day and -12 in total, played 16.

3:19pm

So close to 2-0. Chris Emms played a first-time pass through to Darlington's David Dowson who raced beyond Consett’s David Scorer, but the shot rolled narrowly wide. And now right-back Luke Sullivan has cleared off the line from Dowson.

3:17pm

WICKET: England 66/4 Morgan b Botha 10

Make that Morgan was in. He played the ball on to his own stumps from Botha's ball that went just outside off stump.

Jos Butler moves on in ..

3:15pm

England sit 66/4 at the half way stage of their twenty overs. Not electric by any means, but moving along.

Morgan and Bairstow both on ten, not out.

3:13pm

In the continued absence of Gary Brown, Leon Scott is again Darlington captain’s. He’s again been as forceful as ever in the centre of the pitch. With Dan Smith unavailable, Darren Richardson is making his first start for the club at left-back, although he’s ordinarily a midfielder.
With Adam Nicholls returning to the side at left-wing, Arjun Purewal starts up front for the first alongside David Dowson.

3:10pm

Consett lost 2-0 at league leaders West Auckland on Tuesday, but they were difficult to break down at Darlington Road. Not so today. Darlington sliced through the middle of their defence to take the lead after 15 seconds with Amar Purewal netting his fourth from the club from near the penalty spot. Ten minutes gone, still 1-0.

3:10pm

Decent start to the game at Hartlepool , plenty of tempo and effort. James Poole is looking very lively up front

3:07pm

WICKET: England 50/3 Bopara c Botha b Steyn 6

Bopara too complacent with his shot from Dale Steyn's delivery and caught at slip by Botha.

Jonathan Bairstow takes centre stage ...

3:03pm

3:03pm

GOAL: What a start for Darlington, 1-0 up against Consett after 15 seconds through Amar Purwal. When was the last time Darlington scored so early?

3:00pm

2:59pm

2:59pm

WICKET: England 40/2 Kieswetter lbw b Botha 25

Kieswetter got in a right mess there, caught lbw delivery with Botha's ball heading straight for off stump.

Eoin Morgan in now ...

2:59pm

2:57pm

2:55pm

Kieswetter almost went there. Tried to launch Tsotsobe's delivery over mid on and Johan Botha leapt high to catch but dropped.

Should have gone.

England survive and now sit 36/1 after 5.4 overs.

2:48pm

Shame for Alex Hales, he was a little too keen for a quick single that was never on. Kieswetter didn't even look to run, but Hales burst out of the traps and was in no-mans land by the time Kallis shied at the stumps.

2:48pm

Both of the Darlington mascots are wearing last season’s kit, but have taped over the sponsor’s name, which was a company belonging to former chairman Raj Singh.

2:46pm

WICKET: 27/1

Alex Hales run out on 11 from six balls. Clearly done by the quick throw of Jacques Kallis. It had been going well, Ravi Bopara to take over

2:42pm

Craig Kieswetter has started well. Just - just - hammered Lonwabo Tsotsobe for six in the South African's first over of the day.

England have started brightly, 24-0 after three overs.

2:42pm

New signing Joe Tait is one of three changes in the Darlington side for today’s game against Consett at Heritage Park.
The defender comes in at the expense of Matthew Grieve who made his debut in Wednesday’s 4-1 defeat at Guisborough Town on Wednesday.
Also dropping out of the line-up are left-back Dan Smith and striker Shaun Reay who scored in all of Quakers’ first four matches. In their places are Darren Richardson and Adam Nicholls.

2:39pm

Darlington: Norton, Harrison, Richardson, Ellison, Tait, Arjun Purewal, Emms, Scott, Dowson, Amar Purewal, Nicholls. Subs: Johnson, Porter (gk), Reay, Grieve, Clough
Consett: Jameson, Sullivan, Davidson, Smith, Scorer, Pearson, Aiston, Robson, Teasdale, Mackay, Davies. Subs: Callen, Stanger, Elliott (gk), Richardson, Slocombe

2:37pm

2:36pm

2:33pm

Alex Hales starts well, finds eight runs off the first three balls he has faced for England.

2:31pm

England's Craig Kieswetter to face the first ball of the day from the spin of South African Robin Peterson. Safe. No run.

And off we go ...

2:27pm

Darlington kick off against Consett in half an hour, here's what Martin Gray had to say to Echo man Craig Stoddart yesterday.

2:25pm

Half an hour until kick-off at Heritage Park, the sun's out and Beady Eye's The Beat Goes On is on the PA. This pleases the Echo's reporter very much.

2:22pm

First update of the day from Heritage Park where Darlington play Consett , just two weeks since they met at Belle Vue.
Quakers won that meeting during their successful start to the season, which came to an abrupt end on Wednesday when Martin Gray’s men lost 4-1 at Guisborough Town.
Before then Darlington had won four successive matches: Bishop Auckland (3-1), Marske (3-0), Consett (3-0) and Dunston UTS (4-0).
Gray spent yesterday in talks with potential new signings with one deal being concluded – the arrival of Joe Tait - while another is understood to be on the verge of completion.
Defender Tait has signed having received international clearance following a spell playing in the US having come through the ranks at Hartlepool United.

2:19pm

HARTLEPOOL v Carlisle teams: Flinders; Austin, Collins, Hartley, Horwood; Franks, Murray, Sweeney, Monkhouse; Howard, Poole. Subs: Humphreys, Walton, Baldwin, Holden, Lynch, McHugh, James.

Carlisle: Gillespie; Simek, Robson, McGovern, Murphy, Cadamarteri, Thirlwell, Edwasrds, Berrett, Jervis, Chantler. Subs: Collin (gk), Livesey, Madden, Potts, Beck, Symington, O'Halloran.

Referee: James Adcock (Nottingham)

2:11pm

2:08pm

Twenty-five minutes before the first ball in the men's T20 at the Durham Emirates ICG.

South Africa have won the toss and put England in to bat first.

Team news is that Craig Kieswetter will open with Alex Hales.

There is no James Anderson nor Tim Bresnan. Steven Finn, despite a stiff back problem, is  included at No 9.

And for South Africa there is no Wayne Parnell, with 12th man Faf du Plessis playing instead.

The tourists will have Richard Levi and Jacques Kallis opening the bat.

2:02pm

Sunderland midfielder Craig Lynch signed for Pools - likely to be in today

1:52pm

1:48pm

1:47pm

England's men warming up now, had a quick pep-talk and doing a few shuttle runs now. 45 minutes to go until we start here at Emirates ICG.

12:29pm

That didn't take long. Two hours now until the men's Twenty20 at the Emirates.

England made light work of that  against the West Indies. Skipper Charlotte Edwards led from the front to reach an undefeated 27 from 26 balls, which included three fours.

Edwards was helped along by 31 from Laura Marsh before she was stumped by Merissa Aguilleira and four from Sarah Taylor until being caught by Britney Cooper off the bowling of Shermaine Campbell.

Arran Brindle was  on five not out alongside Edwards when England claimed the first victory of the three match series against the tourists.

Now we wait for the men ... 2.30pm start against South Africa.

12:23pm

One run will win it, and they've done it. 9.4 overs and Edwards nicks a single to claim a straightforward victory. Two hours in, England see off West Indies. Bish. Bash. Bosh.

12:22pm

WICKET! ENGLAND 66-2 Taylor 4 c Cooper b Campbelle

Marsh's replacement Sarah Taylor is caught by Britney Cooper. However, as we speak, England are two away from wrapping this up, shy of the halfway mark of the innings.

12:20pm

England need six to win.

12:17pm

WICKET!  ENGLAND 59-1 Marsh 31 st  Aguilleira b Mohammed

First blood for the West Indies, the tourists' captain Aguilleira stumping Laura Marsh off Anisa Mohammed, the England opener scoring 31.

12:10pm

England 54 without loss after six overs. Only need 18 to win. Would it be disrespectful to say "start the car"?

12:03pm

Edwards 18 and Marsh 14 are England's opening pair. Four overs in and they've already put up a stronger partnership than any of West Indies' order.

12:01pm

England 35 without loss, three overs in. All fairly routine. Whenever a boundary is scored, there are smoke machines and a dancing troupe in front of the Lumley End celebrate. Think they might be busy today.

11:47am

England up and running, Charlotte Edwards already notching 6 off 5 balls as they chase down 72.

11:40am

NEWS update ahead of Hartlepool's match with Carlisle United this afternoon.

Pools have signed Craig Lynch from Sunderland on a month's loan and he IS eligible to face the Cumbrians this afternoon at Victoria Park.

11:39am

West Indies' total was the eighth worst score of all time in Women's international T20 cricket.

11:37am

END of first session, the West Indies have ended  71-8 at the Emirates ICG.

It was a poor total for the tourists, whose top scorers were Tremayne Smart on 14 and Merissa Aguilleira hit 21 from 29 balls.

England's Holly Colvin took two wickets for just five runs in an impressive showing, while Katherine Brunt claimed two for 16.

England's batting order should have no problems in reaching that total when the play resumes shortly.

11:33am

WICKET! W. INDIES 54-8 Daley 6 c Beaumont b Wyatt

11:15am

WICKET! W.INDIES 48-7: King 0 b Colvin

Another one for England, Stacy-Ann King stumped by Taylor off Colvin - the tourists are rocking here. Tremayne Smartt and Shanel Daley are in the middle now. For now, anyway.

11:12am

WICKET! W. INDIES 48-6: Cooper 5 run out

A sublime piece of fielding by Charlotte Edwards there. The England skipper's run out of Britney Cooper was a joy to behold.

11:05am

The projected score here at Emirates ICG is 66. Windies 43-5. England haven't lost a T20 match in 18 months and in truth that looks set to stay that way today.

11:04am

10:59am

WICKET! W. INDIES 37-5: Aguilleira 21 c Shrubsole b Marsh

West Indies lose Merissa Aguilleira after 11 overs, Shrubsole taking the catch from Laura Marsh's delivery. Remember, the lowest total in an international T20 is 60...

10:54am

WICKET! W. INDIES 35-4: Campbelle 11 b Colvin

Colvin bowls around the wicket and takes her first victim of the morning, bowling Shemaine Campbelle who had compiled 11.

10:51am

Nine overs down, West Indies have steadied the ship, they're 35-3, approaching the halfway point at the innings.

10:39am

West Indies 24-3, they've settled down after what can only be described as a disastrous opening. Merissa Aguilleira has looked sharp for the tourists, she's got 12 so far from 13 balls. Five overs down.

10:29am

It's at this point that the record books are consulted. The lowest total in a women's T20 international innings was posted by Pakistan in 2009 when they were 60 all out. The opposition? England in 2009.

10:26am

WICKET! W. INDIES 7-3: Dottin 0 b Shrubsole lbw

Crikey. I know T20 is quick, but this is ridiculous. Nine balls in and West Indies are three down. This time, it's Anya Shrubsole who snares Deandra Dottin, who trudges off with 0 to her name. I have a bacon sandwich in front of me which has remained uneaten. It may still be warm by the changeover.

10:21am

Clarification on Stefanie Taylor, who is omitted from the Windies side - she's studying for an exam and will be in the country on Monday.

10:20am

WICKET ! W. INDIES 5-2: Knight 0 b Brunt lbw

Cracking first over for England and Katherine Brunt, she's taken two wickets, dismissing Kycia Knight who goes for a golden duck.

10:18am

WICKET : W. INDIES 0-1: Nero 0 b Brunt lbw

Great start for England, Katherine Brunt taking first blood on only her second ball with Juliana Nero lbw.

10:10am

For England, there's disappointment for local girl Danielle Hazell - who Paul Fraser interviewed yesterday here  - misses out.

10:08am

Big news here is that Stefanie Taylor, West Indies all-rounder and one of the most exciting talents in women's cricket, misses out. As yet unknown why she's been omitted from the first T20.

10:05am

England Women: CM Edwards, LA Marsh, SJ Taylor, A Brindle, DN Wyatt, TT Beaumont, JL Gunn, SE Rowe, KH Brunt, HL Colvin, A Shrubsole.

West Indies Women: JB Nero, KA Knight, MR Aguilleira, DJS Dottin, SA Campbelle, SF Daley, B Cooper, SACA King, TD Smartt, A Mohammed, SC Selman

West Indies won the toss and will bat first.

10:02am

Pitch looking decent, and the weather is set fair. Slight north-westernly breeze here but not enough to make a massive difference to the conditions.

10:01am

GOOD MORNING SPORTS FANS.

It's the Northern Echo's Live Sport Blog, making an earlier-than-normal appearance today. The reason for that is because Emirates Durham ICG is hosting a double header of international cricket, which begins in 15 minutes when England Women face West Indies Women in a T20 match. The men's team take to the field mid-afternoon. A crowd of 10,000 is expected here in Chester le Street. Team news to follow.
