Darlington put four past Gateshead youngsters

Darlington 4 Gateshead 0

DARLINGTON crowned their first performance at their new temporary home, Heritage Park, with a convincing 4-0 victory over a youthful Gateshead side.

All the goals came in the first half as Shaun Reay continued his impressive pre-season form with a brace alongside goals from skipper Gary Brown and Chris Emms.

Quakers boss Martin Gray fielded a strong XI which could give some hints to his preferred side with ten days until the season opener.

The strength of the home side showed from the first whistle as they flew out of the traps and tested a shaky visiting defence.

Emms tested former Darlington keeper Jordan Nixon with a low left foot shot after a clever back-heel from David Dowson.

Quakers fans were not made to wait long for their first goal at their new home though, with Dowson again the provider. He caught Gateshead defender Michael Roberts napping in possession and unselfishly squared to Reay for the easiest of tap ins after 12 minutes.

Reay's second came less than ten minutes later. Adam Nicholls' pinpoint ball from the left split the visiting defence and Reay coolly slotted past Nixon.

Nixon wasn't having the best of returns to his old club and he was at fault for the hosts' third on 25 minutes. His failure to claim an inswinging Emms corner caused havoc in the Gateshead area with Brown eventually able to scramble the ball home.

Peter Ravenhill provided the greatest threat for the visitors but his inability to convert Callum Patton's cross cost them their best chance.

Emms rounded off the scoring. He seized upon an under-hit backpass to round the hapless Nixon and grab Quakers' fourth on half time.

Gateshead enjoyed better possession in the second half. However, bar Ryan McGoragan sending a point-blank effort over the bar and Jack Norton's acrobatics denying Ravenhill, it was a comfortable night for Gray's men.

Darlington (4-4-2) : Norton; Harrison, Arjun Purewal, Brown, Smith; Emms (Lowe 86), Clough (Scott 73), Ellison (Richardson 73), Nicholls (Amar Purewal 62); Reay (Clarke 62) Dowson (Johnson 62). Sub (not used): Connor (gk)

Gateshead (4-4-2) : Nixon; McGlen, Lilley, Mole (Graham 66), Roberts; Luke, Carr, Ramshaw, Patton, McGoragan, Ravenhill (Barton 69). Subs (not used): Sweet, Sharp

Attendance : 532

  • Darlington have been drawn away to Hebburn in the preliminary round of the Durham Challenge Cup, to be played on or before September 22.

Now calm down, calm down all you 1883 fans out there. Don't go getting excited about this result, Gateshead fielded a team of mainly youth team players / reserves and Darlington fielded the probable 11 that will start the season off!

The gate of 532 was nothing special either considering it was the 1st home game against a team from the blue Square Premier - I really cannot understand why your so called supporters cannot get behind you for a home friendly!? How will this club ever make money if they stay away by the 100's?

Half decent performance against a junior squad!

Now calm down Mr Smith, don't get all excited about another opportunity to spout garbage. Where are all your Troll mates ?
Darlo win 4-0 and your the only Troll to crawl out of your cave and sound off.
I really can't understand why you so called Trolls can't club together and post something original.
How will you ever upset us supporters if you Trolls stay away in your hundreds.

Spout garbage, did you go to the game last night? As I said decent performance against a junior squad.

I'm all original and don't need any followers, I am a leader someone who can stand up and be counted unlike the fans of Darlington 1883 - fancy a community club struggling to find traveling fans (even for home games) and volunteers?

They are staying away in the 100's and it is telling you something, nobody is interested in amateur football. Amateur football is what your club is and is also what your town deserves.

The fans I saw last night were more troll like than the guy in Billy Goats Gruff.

A smith....er who actually needed to be calmed down?

The report clearly states the Heed team were youthful. Darlo fans also knew beforehand the heed team wouldn't be the first team.

Darlo also played the night before.

And....no disrespect to the Heed but even a friendly against a Gateshead first 11 would probably have drawn the same crowd.

Darlo are having to start again thanks to being lead a merry dance by the FA. Under the circumstances the fans and community have rallied excellently. Do some research and check the season ticket sales - and - the estimated crowd for Darlo's first game of the season.

Mr Smith should read his own comments as he seems to change his mind to suit his comment.First he says we had a poor crowd for a Blue square bet team then when he talks of the thrashing that the heed received he changes it to a junior team to justify the loss.Talk about clutching at straws.

Dingo Chris - Now who is clutching at straws? No matter if they are first / second or Junior team they are still all registered for a Blue Square team - the amateurs that are 1883 have never yet broken the 1000 mark for a gate at any of these friendly games!
The fact is the so called fans of Darlington 1883 are showing their true support and staying away, not only for watching games but also in the investment of both money and by voluntering time!

Dingo Jambo - if thee as a so called fan of 1883 feel that even had Gateshead played their starting 11 the gate would of been around 532, then thee my quaker friend need to wake up and smell the coffee because your league of amateurs has even poorer quality opponents.
Im sure the other 1883 fans will want you to be quiet as they have all been harping on about the massive gates they will fetch!!

As I have said before an amateur team for an amateur town.

What a strange, strange person you are. Did you not do the research I suggested? Or did the grown up who looks after you leave the room for a bit?

So finally you admit that a team of amateurs find it very easy to thrash your so called profesionals It seems that we find it easy to beat heed teams when we are professional or amateur. You should send a team into our league as we might need an easy three points twice a year.

Now now Dumbo Jambo, I don't need an adult to help me out - The word in the oaty town is that 1883 have a sell out, but that is only 1 game, let me say that again 1 game not a full season.

Your amateur club has amateur supporters and they are showing that by the support through the close season!!!

Now how can you say the fans & community have rallied excellently - your own board are begging for volunteers and have admitted the support is poor?

I quote from Monday 23/7/12 Northern Echo - " Darlington 1883 (DFC 1883) board members said season ticket and merchandise sales had been excellent in recent weeks – but far fewer fans had joined the community interest company (CIC) or offered to help fundraise than they had hoped.

Supporters initially pledged more than £325,000 to buy shares by paying money into the Crowdcube online funding system.

However, only about £150,000 has so far been invested in the CIC, which replaced the Crowdcube system.

Craig McKenna, DFC 1883 board member and project manager, said the club had drawn up a list of more than 40 potential fundraising schemes which could not be launched because of a shortage of volunteers. End quote.

Oh yeah that is a community rallying behind a community club isn't it?

Now is that enough research Dumbo?

As professionals you struggled that's why in the conference you still only had 46 points (adding the 10 deducted) and a goal difference of -26 or as I like to see it - 11 wins, 13 Draws, 22 Losses, 47 Goals for & 73 Goals against.

What are you banging on about beating teams like Gateshead as both amateur and professional, you as a true Quakers fan would know they drew on 26/12/11 (1-1) and beat you 1/1/12 (0-1), so how is that an easy three points twice a year?

Come on you muppet get your facts together if your going to bang the drum for your team, because of people like you Darlington 1883 supporters are staying away by the 100's.

Yawn, yawn, Smiffy. I'd rather be one of 500 watching Darlo than one of 50,000 watching the black (mainly) and white (not many, sadly) sh1te.
.
At least when I take a banana to a Darlo game I can eat it, rather than feel obliged to throw it towards the pitch.
Sounds like a racist in the midst to me???

That is the problem with football hooligans they look for trouble in other areas now that the FA is trying to stamp it out of the PROFESSIONAL game.

As a non racist why would anyone even need to mention feeling obliged to throwing a banana onto a pitch?

The best thing the 1883 board could do is find out who you are and ban you now.

SAY NO TO RACISM.
Yawn, Smiffy. So the FA are happy to see it thrive in the amateur game? I think not. Anyway, it's difficult for us English to do, but it's time to stop throwing the much-abused term 'Racism' around, as it's now pretty meaningless.
.
SAY NO TO POLITICAL CORRECTNESS.

No the FA are not happy to see it in the AMATEUR game, however It's harder to stamp out in the AMATEUR game because of the lack of stewards/police etc - RACISM does not belong in any type of football or in deed any sport - but people like you that make comments about throwing bananas onto the pitch stops it being eliminated!

The use of the term 'us English' again is another way of showing your true RACIST colours coming through.

Do society a favour, go play in goal for your local darts team.

A Smith. You are odd. And I mean really really odd.

Remind me again which Darlo fans got carried away with the 4-0 win against Gatesheads's youth / triallist team?

Is nigh on 1500 fans not a bad turn out for a NL team for their first game?

You must also be able to see into the future and predict the attendances of Darlo's future games as you seem to know the attendances will be significantly lower.

Look, if you're lonely and you need someone to talk to try the speaking clock - it'll listen to your inane ramblings all day long and you won't reveal to the general public what a sad lonely person you come across as.

Ha! Once again doonhamer storms in with his reckless regard for the facts! Why let the facts get in the way of a good story eh mate?!

For the uneducated (doonhamer) let me explain...

Darlo had 2 games in 2 days. One against Darlington RA away, one against Gateshead Reserves at home. Now which do you think we put our strongest team out for? Bingo. You've got it in one folks - Gateshead Reserves.

No disrespect intended to The RA, but Gateshead Reserves at home was a sterner test so it was important we had practically our full strength team out there for it, The RA on the other hand had to make do with a team full of trialists, young guns and older players in desperate need of fitness (Gregan, Mellenby).

But like I say - why let facts get in the way of things!

darlo_jambo says...
7:43pm Sat 11 Aug 12

Indeed hilly.

Geographically there is indeed only one team in Darlo.

But the real issue here is the astonishing obsession with Darlington FC. The first poster clearly has had a conversation with himself, or worse, with passers by who couldn't get away quickly enough - claiming Darlo fans were getting over excited by a training game result against Gateshead youths.

I now see it as a compliment. If you really thought something was so unworthy of thought or debate, then you'd ignore it surely? Not so for A smith or doonhammer.
