The Northern Echo unveiled as Darlington 1883 shirt sponsor
11:09am Thursday 28th June 2012 in Sport
The Northern Echo's editor Peter Barron, second right, with, left to right, manager Martin Gray, Longfield School headteacher Susan Johnson and Darlington 1883 chairman Denis Pinnegar
THE Northern Echo is to be the new shirt sponsor of Darlington Football Club, it has been announced today.
It was confirmed last week that the Quakers will play under the name Darlington 1883 in the Northern League at Bishop Auckland's ground from the start of the new season.
And The Northern Echo will be at the heart of plans to get the club back to Darlington and the Football League where it belongs.
The Northern Echo's editor, Peter Barron, signed the deal this morning with chairman, Denis Pinnegar and manager, Martin Gray at the club's new training base, Longfield School in Darlington.
A support package has been agreed which includes a re-commitment of the £10,000 investment pledged earlier this year during the fight to save the club. The money will go into the Community Interest Company established by the club while other arrangements are in place to cement the paper's relationship with the Quakers.
Mr Barron said: "This is a criticial period in the long and proud history of Darlington Football Club and it would have been totally wrong for The Northern Echo to desert the Quakers when they need our support more than ever.
"A town like Darlington needs a professional football club and I hope this sends a signal to other businesses, the local authority and supporters that we need to galvanise as much practical support as possible."
Mr Pinnegar said: "It is fabulous news that the club is going to be supported in this way. It is essential that the club has strong links with the community and The Northern Echo is at the heart of the community. That means a great deal to us and I am delighted to announce this vital partnership."
Mr Gray added: "I think it is fabulous news from the perspective of the management of the club and the supporters that we have The Northern Echo on board in such a visble way. The pieces are falling into place and I'm confident that together we can make this club a success again."
It was also announced this morning that Mr Barron will join a special advisory panel at the club, alongside former manager David Hodgson, MP Jenny Chapman, the club's administrator Harvey Madden, and Alasdair MacConachie, managing director of Vauxhall-Chevrolet motor dealer Sherwoods.

Not good for Townlad RE;;
Great that the local paper can help the local team (who needs all help they can get) shame it comes at a price for 6 local teams / organisations to lose their weekly football slots at Longfield school mid way through their booking, thanks again Andy Collishaw
This is also local news story of Community Interest ?

Well I hope the price of Echo does not go up to pay for this.

Instead of being insulting and flippant about this issue, we should be thanking The Northern Echo for all the support it has given to Darlington football. What is there to gain by shooting the messenger?

Darlington are not new to the Northern League, but many of our fans that haven't been attracted to our neighbouring clubs are. Many may enjoy their visits to real football venues after the farce in Neasham Road and attend future matches.
A large number of Darlo fans attend & provide income at neighbouring clubs whenever we are away, or having swamped pitches in the Feethams era.
Thanks to the Echo for their continued support of a badly done to club.
Darlo need help, so try some local fundraising guys - domino cards etc

I always thought the Echo was a regional paper, not local to Darlington?
The paper makes much of its support for its "local club, but seems to be forgetting about all the other teams in the area, like BishopAuckland,Spenn
ymoor,Shildon, Newton Aycliffe. What about West Auckland?
Remember that theres one hell of a lot of people, who dont reside in Darlington, who read the Echo, and they are not all supporters of Darlo1883.Me included.I think from now on,I will not be reading the Echo.

Talking of shirts and colours. I do hope we are going to have consistency from now on! Black and white hoops for ALL the home games, and possibly a reverse of red for away?

let them.....the paper will be sunk like darlo was...l.o.l....the echo is suposed to be a paper for the local area...do you see them giving any advertisng for local clubs? no you don-t...as for longfield allowing them to use the 3g pitch for free, that is totally wrong....someone should be fired for allowing that....the people in the community are willing to pay for and have been paying for the use of it......what happens when darlington 1883..l.o.l...decide not to use it...it will be left unused...if longfield treats the users like this then i would never use it again.....darlington 1883..l.o.l. seems to be a club that is full of scrounging beggars, wanting everything for free....DO WHAT THE REST OF US DO!!!! START PAYING YOUR WAY.......

Perhaps not much is the correct answer.
Verbal and moral support is probably all they can afford at the moment.
Local councils are belt-tightening at the moment and with Darlington supporters numbering fewer than 2% of the electorate they may have more pressing calls on their finances.
