A MILLION is not easily come by, but Richard Fahey achieved the target of the 1m prize money mark at York last Friday.

Although he had no winner that day, a second by Flying Clarets was among the tally.

His stable jockey Paul Hanagan achieved the same target next day when partnering Anna Pavlova to an interesting win in the 12f Listed Harvest Stakes event at newly-refurbished Ascot. She swerved left when she hit the front and Hanagan blamed the new paddock exit just past the winning post.

She has probably seen the exit, he said. The only time I got scared was when she hit the front, but it is a big, wide track and she went right when hitting the front at York last time. It shows just how good she is.

Fahey, who was at York, added: She stays in training next year we have always liked her and had her in the Irish Oaks and everything. That didnt work out, but she is very talented.

She was set to run again yesterday at Newmarket after we went to press and we expect she will have followed up.

Another planning on a million is Coverham trainer James Bethell, who has come back from Goffs sales with a Hawk Wing colt and a Kings Best filly to aim at the two Goffs Win a Million races at the Curragh next September. Shares are to be sold: details from SallyBethell@aol.com.

York found Howard Johnson winning again for Transcend Bloodstock, which he owns with Andrea and Graham Wylie. This was another fine ride by the in-form Tom Eaves. Young Slade OHara won the Betfair Apprentice finale on the John Quinn-trained Leslingtaylor.

Next day, the final one this year on the Knavesmire, the last big-race winner went to David Barron, who was three-handed in the 35,000 Coral Sprint Trophy. Franny Norton flew from well off the pace in an exciting finish, and was cheered into the winners circle by window specialist Glenn Morrill and friends from Bradford.

Tim Barron, representing his father, said: Im pleased for the horse, and his owner, that hes clinched a big one. Hes a capable horse, who prefers the ground good or softer, so conditions were ideal for him.

Tim Easterbys fans were not let down when Bollin Derek, partnered by David Allan, scooped the last on the card and last for the season.

Barron went on to have a winner at both Musselburgh and Ayr, while Easterbys Malcheek scored at Wolverhampton.

Tomorrow at Newmarket, our northern raiders in the Cesarewitch include Lets Roll (Chris Thornton), Dont Call Me Derek ( John Quinn) and the horse whos been a revelation this season, Numero Due (George Moore), all worth an each-way squeak. Earlier, our nap is Tim Easterbys Somnus in the Challenge Stakes.

THE JUMPS SCENE When the first Wetherby meeting comes round again, we know we are in for all the fun of the winter game.

John Sanderson criticised Ascot at the annual press lunch for its somewhat aggressive policies in framing a new race to clash with the Charlie Hall Chase at the Yorkshire course and, in causing Weatherbys to downgrade the Castleford Chase to a 0-145 handicap, removing its Pattern status.

He said he understood that the Ascot Authority had spent some 200m on their upgrade, but wished they would desist with what I would describe as their philosophy of divine right.

While Ascot is perfectly entitled to assume it is the cream, the Ascot Authority should remember that the cream on top of a pint of milk is supported by just that, a full pint of milk, and we know what happens to the cream if you shake the bottle too much it disappears.

On the course, Paddy Brennan made a good start in his new role as stable jockey to Howard Johnson, winning in the Wylie colours on Hard Act To Follow in the beginners event. Graham Wylie said: What he did last season over hurdles was a bonus, as weve always regarded him as a chasing sort.

John Quinns good form on the level continued at Bangor when Dougie Costello won on Caraman and again at Wetherby when he sent out the one-two in the handicap hurdle, the 20-1 shot Archie Babe (Costello) beating 15-2 Aleron (Russ Garritty). George Moore has also had a good summer on the Flat and won the last here, Tom OBrien wearing wife Carol Moores colours on Lord Rosskit.

European Dream was the first winner on the Wetherby card, owned by Sam Allardyce and members of his Bolton team and trained by Richard Guest, who said: He was a bit keen again, but he was a decent Flat horse and Im hoping hell be above average over hurdles. Hell now go for a decent race at Cheltenham.

Hexhams Saturday meeting found Sharon Watt back in the winners circle with Top The Bill. Micky Hammond also won with Tee-Jay. At Uttoxeter on Wednesday, the Sheriff Hutton team of Tim and Robert Walford landed the bumper with St Wilfrid.
