Quakers chairman hopes to get back some of his cash
9:45am Tuesday 24th April 2012 in Sport
Exclusive By Joe Willis, Regional Chief Reporter
OWED MONEY: Raj Singh
OUTGOING Quakers chairman Raj Singh has indicated he will reject a request to write off the money he is owed by the club unconditionally.
Without Mr Singh’s backing as the club’s largest creditor, a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) proposed by community company Darlington FC 1883 (DFC 1883) is now expected to fail.
However, DFC 1883 last night reassured fans that the club would still survive.
Mr Singh told The Northern Echo he did not want any of the money raised by fans bidding to save the club from liquidation.
But he repeated an assertion that he should get back some of the £800,000 he is owed, if the club received money for decisions he made.
It is understood Mr Singh wants a share if the club benefits from any redevelopment of the Arena site.
A second condition relates to clauses in the contract of former Quakers defender Dan Burn, who was sold to Fulham last summer. That could lead to money for Darlington FC.
DFC 1883 announced last week that the conditions had been removed from the CVA because they were not acceptable to the Football Association.
However, Mr Singh said his lawyers believed the conditions could be met if the agreement was structured differently.
The chairman told The Northern Echo he felt he was being “stitched up” and would be blamed if the CVA was not accepted at the creditors meeting on May 4.
He added: “What are they expecting me to do? Sign a piece of paper and walk away?
In business and in reality that just doesn’t happen.
“I don’t want any money from the funds that have been raised, but it’s only fair that if they’re going to get any back because of deals that have been done in the past, then I get a share.
“I hear that they’re already going down the route of a phoenix club and blaming me is an easy way out.”
Mr Singh said no one from DFC 1883 had called him for three or four weeks. “That just shows how keen they are to sort things out,” he added.
The former chairman is also unhappy at suggestions the club was left heavily in debt.
He said: “There was no debt – those were just the invoices for December. People need to get their facts right.”
In response, Craig McKenna, board member and project manager for DFC 1883, said that when he took over running the rescue bid, he decided it would be more efficient if discussions with Mr Singh took place through their lawyers.
“We’re confident the club will be saved and a phoenix club is not on the agenda,” he added.

We, the community, are still raising the funds to make up the mess we were left with when he made his biggest and final decision - walking away and leaving us to die.
Did I dream that he wouldn't stand in the way of a community club? It's a shame we know too late what the "word" of this "honourable" businessman is worth.

In laymans terms, anyone with money to spare, investing in a football club will finance things until success is met, then only take back what they initially put in, great ..... everyone's a winner. But, when the club is not successful whether it's bad Management, Players or apathy from the fans, when that person pulls out he wants his "gift" back. Why shouldn't he ?.. it's HIS money, not Darlos and certainly not 1883's who do not help themselves in any way whatsoever as far as the majority of the Darlo fan base are concerned. Ignorant people just do not listen. Weeks ago, any one with a jot of sense knew that a CVA will NOT work. Just like they knew Darlo would be relegated. Just like they know that a possible "Phoenix" club is the only answer. However, judging by the apathy and negative reponse by the fans one now thinks that unless moves are made soon to link up with either the R.A, Shildon, Bishops or the like re a ground share, then this avenue will also be doomed to failure. If so, Saturday's game v Kettering could and very much likely will be the last and the clueless ones among you will only concern themselves whether or not Darlo can end a 20 game winless run against a club who are also doomed. It DOES NOT matter one iota, but some of you can't see the wood for the trees, sad so very, very sad.
Raj Singh, Thurs Jan 5th 2012:
"I'll walk away, I'm not expecting a penny back," Singh told BBC Tees.
"I could make things difficult for the administrators but I won't. I want the club to survive, to do well."
Clearly he has reversed his decision but expects people not to blame him.
If Raj Singh wanted to profit from decisions he made while in charge of the club then he should also take responsibility for the losses made as the result of his decisions and he should have kept the club going for long enough for his "fantastic" decisions to bear fruit.
Instead he walked away mid season failing to honour contracts he sanctioned just a few months previously.
As for no debt, that is also incorrect. He failed to pay the players some/all their wages in Oct, Nov & Dec. Compensation to Mark Cooper & Richard Dryden is outstanding. Plus he once again ignores the £800k of debt in his name that he said in the Matchday programme Feb 26th 2011 was a "gift".

He claimed the club was debt free - to be honest this seems to be true up until November when he started reneging on players contracts. However by January the club did have debt.
He claimed he had not loaned the club money - yet when we are placed into administration we owe him 800k, for money he loaned us.
Added to the first two comments, it doesn't show Raj Singh in a good light.
I especially can't understand how he expects a cut of any stadium/land deal becase he thinks he put a deal in place. He walked away from the club because he COULDN'T do a deal and was sick of putting money in!
I bought a car last year that has caused me nothing but problems, and I've lost a lot of money. I'm going to follow Raj Singh's example and ask the garage I bought the car from to give me a cut of their future car sales and if they move premises I want a cut of that too!

Raj Singh clearly says that he left the club 'debt free'. How can the club be 'debt free' yet we owe him £800k? His word means nothing.
He clearly said "I'll walk away, I'm not expecting a penny back". If we were truly 'debt free' we shouldn't have owed him any money in the first place.

As for the figure of 800k he is in dreamland if DFC 1883 should contribute, it is with owners of stadium who or what happens to the land not Mr Singh who had a tenuous link(no contract) at best! Atleast in June we can forget the lot, start afresh and let Raj bicker with himself

Why should Singh lose his £800k? It looks like his decision has probably been swayed by DFC1883's failure to raise even half of the £750k required to run the Club. This proves that there isn't the support from the community. Even the Club's own trust won't put in their £40k, which they have held on to for years. Singh bankrolled the Club, got sick of it and walked away. The community had the opportunity but they didn't respond. After all the talk of shoe-string Singh and the criticism he took, who could blame him for bailing out? It looks like the fat lady is about to sing.!
.
First point, 1883 don't need 750k, that was a deliberately ambitious target. Secondarily, we HAVE raised MORE than half of the 750k, the crowdcube figure is not complete or accurate. Thirdly, even taking the (wrong) total of 309k as the figure raised, it is still a HUGE figure of money for fans of a non league club from a small and poor town to raise.
How DARE you say that is a suggestion that the community doesn't want it's club, how DARE you. I'd say it's more than enough evidence that plenty of people care.
Retard.

1) RS started building up debt as early as November by refusing to pay players or settle management contracts, even allowing Mark Cooper to hand out expensive deals to players just days before his dismissal: presumably, he built up debt intentionally so that the business could be put into administration.
2) Since January, all of this debt (past wages and costs of administration) has fallen to the fans to pay with money donated in various ways - this in addition to the £800,000 RS is claiming was 'a loan'.
So, to reiterate, RS wants the fans to pay off his debts, repay money that was never loaned in the first place, and receive 'dividends' after cashing in his 'shares' (ie possible but dubious future money from the transfer of a player and the sale of land, none of which he still has a stake in).
Is this clear enough?

MrRealist - We know the stadium is too big for us, but why on earth are you comparing Darlo's gates to the best supported L2 club by far, in Bradford? And so they should be as they are a championship sized town and club with cheap season tickets. There are plenty of clubs in L2 (where we've fallen from) with a fraction of Bradford's gates, who are ran just fine because they're ran within their means.
Lastly, we don't need to "imagine a prospective new owner", because that owner will be us and we'll cut our cloth accordingly. I'm also confident we'll have a jump in gates once the community takes over, it's happened with other clubs.
Any other idiots want any uninformed pap answering correctly? No? Good!

If we don't agree the CVA we end up being relegated a further division i.e. to the Evostick Premier League. If we were to reform we'd most likely end up in Northern League Division 1. Also if we don't agree the CVA there is no debt.
Therefore definately not the same division.

You basically said that the first 250k had been spent. This is false.
Some have asked DFC1883 how they can withdraw their money from CrowdCube if they have invested in Phase 1. Craig McKenna said that if people wanted to do that they then would find a way.
Therefore to me this suggests that the first 250k hasn't been spent.

Do you know for fact that the CrowdCube money has already been used? And I mean cold hard facts - not your opinion.
As for openness, I fail to see how a group of fellow fans (which DFC 1883 are) could of been more open. They've held open fans forums, they've got a Q&A session going on via Darlo Uncovered and they release regular press releases.
Surely it makes sense not to report on items which are ongoing, or perhaps not even true at all e.g. The stadium move rumour.
I'd prefer DFC 1883 acted as professionally as possible rather than decend into anarchy.

You claimed that the money was coming from CrowdCube and I gave you evidence to suggest that it wasn't - end of story!
If you want to know where the money is coming from, as I keep saying, all you have to do is ask the right people!
Also, surely you can see the irony in suggesting that you're having ro rely on the press for information, because it's 1883 that are giving information to the press!

You claimed to know that the Crowdcube money had been spent. This was a downright lie.
After tonight's latest events it's been announced that everyone is to get their money back from CrowdCube with a chance of reinvesting in the new venture should they wish.
How can money be returned when as you claimed - had already been spent?
LIES!

Do you think money would have been offered back had it not been for the groundswell of opinion ?
Do you class 1883 saying that immediate future was at white elephant then weeks later that the arena is not viable a LIE

You quite clearly said:
"Hilly where do yo think money to pay harvey madden is coming from Raj? no its ours ie the fans within the first 250k non refundable phase why do you thin it was phased?"
That sentence doesn't sound like an opinion does it? Hell, I'd even goes as far to say that it was your attempt at stating a fact.
Face it. I've given you every opportunity for you to explain that it was 'just your opinion' but even when presented with cold hard information you chose to ignore me and spread mis-information.
Long story short. I'm right. You're wrong. The sooner your realise that the better.

That's how it had been understood by you - not everybody lets get that clear.
This doesn't give you the right to go around and spreading malicious lies.
DFC1883 have a hard enough job as it is without having to release press statements to counter the actions of some gobs***e who go around claiming things as facts.

I have never spread any malicious lies simply expressed and opinion as you have. All you have to do is look on your beloved forum there are dozens of people who thought this to be the case and it was reported in the press.
Perhaps if 1883 had made this clearer so everyone did understand then there wouldn't have been room for misunderstandings in the first place

How about just now?...
"Perhaps if 1883 had made this clearer so everyone did understand..."
Oh and your opinion? Yeah... sounds like it:
"Hilly where do yo think money to pay harvey madden is coming from Raj? no its ours ie the fans within the first 250k non refundable phase why do you thin it was phased?"
Keep digging. This is fun.
