THE weather got the better of last week’s fixtures, with only three games starting and only one completed.
The Division One match between Middleham and Spennithorne and Harmby saw the visitors get off to a very good start in the field. Middleham found themselves struggling on 32-6 off 8.5 overs when heavy rain intervened and the match was abandoned. Vince Greaves- Newall had taken four wickets for seven runs in 3.5 overs.
The only game to be completed was between West Tanfield and Newton le Willows, with the visitors winning the toss and electing to bat. A superb opening spell from Chris Taylor (2-15 from five overs) kept the scoring to a minimum and, despite some big hitting from junior Z Spence (28), Newton were only able to post 94-9, Tony Clark taking 3-21 from five overs.
Both Tanfield openers were dismissed cheaply before Andy Ganderton steadied the ship with a quick 16, but the match was won by junior Reece Farron, who hit a brilliant unbeaten 35 to see Tanfield home on 95-7 with only four balls to spare.
The win keeps last year’s champions still third in the table, but now only two points behind Masham and Thorp Perrow.
In Division Two, the only game to get started was between The Waggon and Horses Bedale and Eryholme. The Waggon got off to a steady start with T Graham (24) and M Tweddle (14) before they lost wickets cheaply. They were on 71-7 from 17.4 overs when the weather brought the game to an end.
