STUDENTS at Thirsk School capped a fine season with an appearance in a regional championship last week.

The under-14s basketball team played Notre Dame High School, in Sheffield, on Thursday in the regional rally, after taking success at area and county level.

The game ended 76-14 to the hosts, but Thirsk still had the distinction of being North Yorkshire champions.

Their journey started in November when they took the area rally at Bedale High School, scoring 60 points in three eightminute games, before winning the North Yorkshire county rally, representing Hambleton and Richmondshire.

Thirsk’s first-round opponents were Newlands Girls’ School in Hull on Tuesday of last week, and their quality showed with a solid victory.

PE teacher and basketball coach, Mark Karvounis, said: “We can take a lot from this game and this season, we have performed brilliantly to get this far and are still North Yorkshire champions.

“I am very proud of the girls for being great sports and never giving up at any time through the season.

The target for next season is to retain both the area and county titles.

The Thirsk team consisted of: Evie Maury, Lizzy Lee, Kate Burrell, Niamh Bown, Hayley Tyson, Amanda O’Brien, Beth Suffield and Elega Simpson.
