THE second round of the League Challenge Cup did not throw up too many shocks last Sunday as most of the ties went with the form book.

The tie of the round was the only all-Division One clash as leaders Sportsmans FC travelled to second-placed Kildale.

Mark Croft appeared to have put the hosts through when he gave them the lead with just ten minutes remaining, but Sportsmans bounced back and Aaron Ramsbottom equalised five minutes later to send the tie into extra-time.

Ramsbottom then struck again ten minutes into the first extra period after good work from Scott McNichol to put the leaders in front for the first time, while his brother Andrew then sealed their place in the last eight soon after. With the tie now effectively over, a cross from Sam Grainger was turned into his own net by a Kildale defender to complete a 4-1 victory.

Holders Unison GLR eased into the quarter-finals with a comfortable 4-0 win at neighbours Nags Head United from Division Two.

The tie was all over before the break as a brace from Lee Shardha and two penalties by Mark Raw, both conceded for fouls by Matthew Walker on Colin Anderson, put the holders in control – and that was the way it finished.

Last year’s runners-up Richmond Turf also avoided a potential banana skin as they beat Henleys from Division Three 5- 1 at home. It was a brave effort from the underdogs, but they were unable to contain a rampant Carl Chillingworth as the Turf striker hit all five to send the hosts comfortably through.

Frank Bainbridge Cup finalists Northallerton Police remain on course for a cup double after they beat Appleton Wiske from Division Two 5-0 at home. A goal from Dan Cardie was all that separated the sides at the break but the Police stepped up a gear in the second half to book their place in the quarter-finals as Ian Brown, Ben Darville and another two from Cardie to complete his hat-trick finally saw off the visitors.

In Division One there was a real relegation six-pointer as second-from-bottom Osmotherley FC visited bottom side Blue Star. Gareth Davies headed home a corner from Martyn Pugh to give the visitors an early lead, but he then repeated the trick at the other end, heading past his own keeper Stephen Widdowfield to bring Star level just before the break.

A mistake at the back by Billy Mawson allowed David James to put the hosts in front for the first time on the hour but, with time running out, Craig Hutton chipped home keeper James Star to ensure the points were shared.

Spotted Dog moved away from danger with a 2-1 home win over fading Colburn Town.

Richard Snowdon released Mark Swanwick to give the hosts an early lead and, although Colburn were level before the break, their chances were not helped by an instant red card for Mark Swales after a crude lunge on Mark Flood.

The Dog made the extra man count in the final ten minutes when Martin Cundy sent over a cross from the left and Alec Lawson arrived to turn the ball home from close range to give the hosts some breathing space at the bottom of the table.

In Division Two, Brompton on Swale jumped to the top of table with a 2-0 home win over Northallerton WMC. A Paul Orton penalty midway through the first half gave Brompton the lead, while Sean Radford then sealed the points with a stunning 35-yard free-kick 20 minutes from time.

In Division Three Vale of York finally got their first win of the season with a 1-0 home victory over promotion-chasing West Tanfield thanks to a goal from Michael Lax.
