League is hit by return of freeze

Hambleton League

THE freezing weather conditions last Sunday saw the postponement of all eight ties in the League Challenge Cup second round.

The tie of the round between Kildale and Sportsmans, the top two in Division One, was set to be the only all-top flight clash, while holders Unison GLR will have to wait a little longer for their tie with neighbours Nags Head United, currently riding high in Division Two.

Last year’s beaten finalists Richmond Turf would have been favourites to see off third division Henleys, while Northallerton Police faced a potentially tricky tie against Division Two promotion chasers Appleton Wiske.

It is now hoped the ties will be rescheduled for later this month as the backlog of fixtures is really beginning to pile up.

The scheduled league fixtures fared little better, with only one beating the weather, meaning the Division One match between Colburn Town and Osmotherley FC was called off, along with the Division Two games at Cowtons and the all three games in Division Three.

This Sunday sees the quarter- finals of the divisional cups and in the Division One Frank Bainbridge Cup holders Richmond Turf face a repeat of last year’s final when they travel to Unison, while leaders Sportsmans face struggling Spotted Dog and Kildale meet Robert Thompsons.

Northallerton Police are already through to the last four having beaten Blue Star two weeks ago.

In the Bob Seymour Trophy, Division Two leaders Stokesley SC meet struggling Cowtons, while Brompton- On-Swale travel to Appleton Wiske.

Improving The Academy face second-placed Nags Head United, who beat them 9-1 in the league recently, while Three Coopers, who have won this trophy in the past, are at home to Colburn Town Reserves.

The Division Three Scorpion Cup sees league leaders County Arms face struggling Brafferton Rangers, Catterick Village go to Bar One, Travaux FC are at home to Osmotherley Rangers, while bottom side Vale of York will be hoping for cup cheer when they face West Tanfield
