Bowes’ title charge checked by challengers Richmond

Wensleydale League

DEFENDING champions Bowes saw their march to a fourth straight title slowed down a little as second-placed Richmond Town Academy came from behind to grab a 2-2 draw at Barnard Castle last Saturday.

Goals from Nicky Bellew and Andrew Smith looked to have put the champions on course for another three points before the break but the Academy came back well in the second half with a brace from Sean Radford to grab a share of the spoils.

Colburn Town were unable to take advantage of that minor blip by the leaders as they lost 3- 1 at home to bogey team Buck Inn Old Boys. The visitors had been the only team to beat Colburn in the league so far this season, and they repeated the trick again as first-half goals from Mickey White and John Bishton set them on the way.

Tom Keegan briefly put the hosts back into it soon after the restart, but substitute Robin Dale sealed another impressive win for the Old Boys with a marvellous solo goal ten minutes from time.

Leyburn United found their shooting boots for the second week in a row as they beat struggling visitors Carperby Rovers 9- 2. Jordan Braithwaite scored the first of his hat-trick after just 12 minutes, while Glynn Barnard doubled the lead soon after.

Veteran striker Nick Oliver pulled a goal back for the visitors after half an hour, but Oliver Anderson and Barnard again sealed the points before the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern as Barnard and Braithwaite both went on to complete their hat-tricks while Anderson, bravely playing just a day after the death of his father, added his second. Oliver did likewise for Carperby but Charlie Aliss completed the scoring three minutes from time to make it 21 goals from the last two games for the free-scoring hosts.

Hawes United remain seventh after beating Redmire United 2-1 in a match switched to Redmire.

Darren Bell gave Hawes the lead with a powerful finish midway through the first half, while Stuart Sunter then doubled their advantage after the break following a great ball from Lloyd Iveson.

The hosts staged a late rally which saw Sean Osborn pull a goal back with two minutes left, but it was too little, too late, and Hawes left with all three points.

Inconsistent Spennithorne and Harmby enjoyed a good day as they won 4-1 at Unicorn FC.

Andrew Hunt gave the hosts an early lead but goals from Darren Enright and an own goal from Mike Elliott put Spenni in control by the break.

That was the way it stayed until five minutes from time when a long clearance from visiting keeper David Mutch was headed home by James Clarkson, while his brother Ian then scored with an amazing free-kick from inside his own half to complete the scoring.

Richmond Mavericks A enjoyed a comfortable 4-0 home win over bottom side Hawes B.

Goals from Gordon Wade, Karl Bebbington and Scott Fenney ended the match as a contest before the break, while Paul Hunter then added a fourth soon after the restart to mean that the visitors will have to wait a little longer to pick up their first points of the season.

The match between strugglers Reeth and Askrigg United was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
