Battling Quakers let it slip

Chesterfield 5 Darlington 2

IN the Saltergate press box after the final whistle on Saturday an excited local radio reporter announced to his listeners “Yet another home win for Chesterfield in a completely one-sided game!” He was only half right.

Bearing in mind that Derbyshire’s answer to Alan Green had been confusing Ian Miller with Steve Foster all afternoon he can hardly be regarded as the most reliable of witnesses.

Home win? Undoubtedly, but one-sided? Do me a favour mate.

The final score was car crash stuff for Darlington supporters and will do nothing for the confidence of Steve Staunton’s inexperienced side.

But when Jonathan Hogg capped his impressive debut to make the score 3-2 with three minutes plus added time to play it looked like Quakers might snatch their first away point of the season.

Instead, Staunton, who before the game had declared that “clean sheets are vital,”

was left to reflect on Darlington’s heaviest defeat for two years.

“We got back into it through Hoggy and you think anything can happen at 3-2,’’ he said.

“I saw plenty of good things out there, but after keeping a clean sheet one week to concede five is very disappointing.

I told the lads they’d given away a shocking fourth goal.

3-2 you take on the chin, but 5- 2? no way.”

To prevent this setback from scuppering Darlington’s survival bid it’s crucial they take something from tomorrow night’s encounter with Morecambe at The Northern Echo Arena.

Despite the dreadful result, there were more signs of the positive impact Staunton and Kevin Richardson are having on the team.

Simon Thomas had a pointblank effort saved brilliantly by home goalkeeper Tommy Lee before James Collins, Hogg’s reserve team-mate at Aston Villa, showed superb control to net from 30 yards with Lee stranded.

It was the first time Darlington have scored two goals away from home all season and their efforts should have been rewarded with at least a point.

But a defence that had been immaculate at home to Burton Albion last week were slovenly against the Spireites.

“To concede a throw-in from taking too many steps from our own throw-in is poor and our centre halves didn’t stand firm for the fourth goal,” noted Staunton, whose only new injury concern is a kick in the back sustained by Hogg.

“It’s a harsh result but that’s football. If you make the kind of mistakes we made then you will be punished because they are a decent side.

“I thought we were comfortable until their opening goal and we played nice football.

But then we conceded cheaply. We come back to the same old thing, individual and team errors.”

Staunton rightly lauded his back five after they successfully protected a 1-0 lead over Burton for 83 minutes. But seven days later they couldn’t manage a similar feat for the closing moments of the contest.

As his side pressed for an equaliser the excellent Kieran Djilali and Jack Lester picked apart the visitors’ defensive line with devastating effect.

Scott Boden’s two late goals applied a gloss to a victory that extended his team’s unbeaten home record.

John Sheridan’s side deserve their reputation as League Two’s most attractive outfit.

Both sides represented their respective manager’s playing styles: one stylish and quick-witted the other doggedly honest and full of heart.

Chesterfield’s attempts at fluidity were well stifled in the first half by Staunton’s employment of a five-man midfield.

As Sheridan’s flying wingers marauded down either flank David Davis sat in front of the back four and barked out orders as Hogg and Gary Smith broke up play.

Chesterfield, however, possessed an inventiveness absent from most teams in this division. When Foster, Stuart Giddings and Corey Barnes made the odd defensive lapse, they were punished.

With Curtis Main isolated in attack the game plan was clearly intended to deliver an elusive clean sheet away from home.

So the two first half goals conceded from corners left Staunton fuming and undid all the good work that had seen his players dominate the opening 25 minutes.

“We pushed on in the second half. The boys gave us everything and the subs made an impact. We have to take the good things into the Morecambe game and get back to doing the basics in defence,”

he confirmed.

If his side can manage that, tomorrow’s game may offer the chance to hail a genuinely one-sided affair.

We went all the way to Chesterfield hoping for a miracle, a Darlington away win, but what did we get... soaked to the skin on one of the wettest days of the year and yet another defeat. The bonus was we scored two goals one of which was a beauty from James Collins with his first touch after coming on as substitute. there were one or two plusses from the performance, Collins looked good when he came on, the defence even though they let in five seems more balanced and resolute but the rest of the team are still average and playing young Curtis Main on his own was not a good idea, he needs someone to play off and support him all in all this is one game to forget and we must now go on and defeat Morcombe on Tuesday night to catch up with the other teams

Wrong tactics poor team! The same things were said under Toddy.. We are still bottom! Staunton's got to get rid of the poor players and get better in!

Team Supported: Darlington I dont know howmany of you commenting were there, but it wasnt harsh and we werent unlucky, we were beaten as we have some of the worst players I have ever seen. Now I know Stans hands are tied and he's taken many of them on that werent brought to the club by him,but for someone whos managed at international level, how can he think corey barnes is good enough to play right back?Giddings is awful, cant pass, tackle, defend, get forward or anything and no better than Bower. He played people all over the place today and we were a shambles for an hour and anyone there will tell you we didnt have a single shot for at least an hour! Davis is another wasted loan...useless. yes Chesterfield are decent but that from our players aint good enough. Curtis will get ruined by trying to play him as a loan striker and i felt for him. Thomas is dreadful simple as that, Collins is a much better threat. Its also obvious that Foz has no confidence in his keeper behind him and i dont blame him, Liversedge another out of his depth.
The way we played it looked like we had come for draw and credit for our fighting spirit last half an hour but we have too many playes far from good enough even for league 2,but I will keep the faith and live in hope! It worries me that playing kids and signing non league players isnt going to get the supporers hopes up of staying up or giving them any incentive to go and watch players at the standard you can watch for £3 on a Saturday afternoon"

I agree,we want better, more changes have to be made to strengthen in depth the squad. Time is not on our side so the sooner the better. we have only won two games so far out of 17 played...
Tuesday is a massive game for us, especially as the game after that is at Notts Co.
So Stan & co show us you can do better than Toddy...

So one person says we werent unlucky and the scoreline was justified & so you agree with that person. Plenty, including Ray Simpson, have said we were unlucky and the scoreline was harsh and yet you choose not to listen to that point of view??

In football on/off the pitch you make your own luck! We lost 5/2 on Sat because of a number of reasons and most were highlighted by above comments of that supporter.
I listen to lots of points of view but accepted that one was valid . Its open to debate ; its have your say after all!

So using that point of view if 1 person said the world was flat and a dozen said the world was a globe then you would believe the minority? Plenty have said that we were unlucky to have lost 5-2 so I would tend to agree with the majority rather than one who had an opposing view.

Personally, I didn't expect anything from the game. Away from home, against a team with probably the best home record in the entire Football League. With two minutes ago we were still in with a chance, and due to us pushing for that equaliser we were punished. Surely that's better than just settling for a defeat and not even bothering to push for that goal?

staunton needs to stop changing formations around from game to game. he thinks he is smart, clever by playing 451 system away from home, players don't no this system, stick to 442, staunton has not got the time to experiement, team needs points on the board. main needs a experienced striker (who will hold the ball up, flick on headers, run around, score goals) alongside him to guide him through the game. barnes is just to young and in-experienced for this level of football...he is 1 for the future, can't staunton see this... fans can. foster looks tired, playing too many games. he needs to play one, rest 1, like todd was doing. staunton, WHEN are you going to give some of the other players in the squad a CHANCE ie arnison should come in for barnes, baines should come in for foster, gray should start ahead of g smith, collins upfront with main. looks like staunton is playing his favourite, kiss ars? players, that have not performed lately and they no they are not going to get dropped for the next game. staunton is in a win, win postion. if he gets the team relegated, he will say they were todds players. if darlo don't get relegated(please.. hope not) and staunton will come out and say he saved the club from relegation, with limited funds, players he did not sign etc etc. after all these months together, the players still look like they are strangers on the pitch. stauntons training needs to improve a-sap. if staunton doesn't start picking up points a-sap, starting tomorrow, then i wonder how long will the chairman wait before getting in a new manager. if the club gets relegated, Mr Singh and his investment in the club is worth nothing. chairman needs the club to stay in this division at all costs, even if it means bringing in a new manager by xmas/Jan 2010.
