JUNIOR jockeys turned out for a special gymkhana organised by the Barnard Castle and Teesdale Riding Club. Around 30 youngsters aged from five to 17 took part in a series of events designed to test skill and agility.
Lezley Aldrich, who helped organise the show at Mickleton, said: “This is the second junior gymkhana we’ve held and it’s been a great success.
These kind of events allow our younger riders to have their first taste of competition in a fun, relaxing atmosphere.
“Hopefully it will help build their confidence in an informal setting before they go forward to a full blown competition.”
The club’s junior section was set up two years ago and already has 63 members.
Lezley, who lives in Mickleton, also organised a recent Ride for Life event for riders of all ages to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support.
The event, which took place at Witton Castle, raised more than £3,000 to help care provision for cancer sufferers.
She said: “Thanks to Witton Castle, which helped us out for free, the ride was a tremendous success.”
Another fundraising ride – this time for the Great North Air Ambulance and the Rainbow Trust – is planned for August.
When the event is finalised full details will be posted on the club’s website which is www.bcandtrc.co.uk
