Female trials stars descend on Scarborough

12:47pm Friday 4th July 2008

JAMES Dabill was the top Brit in the sixth round of the FIM World Trials Championship on Sunday at Tolmezzo, Northern Italy with a cracking sixth place.

Dougie Lampkin was down in eighth place after the first lap but fired back with a strong second lap. Jack Challoner also gained points in the Youth event but he still leads that title battle.

On Saturday the Brits were out in force in the UEM.

Michael Brown won the Euro event, while Jack Challoner and Jonathan Richardson scored well. Brown and Challoner lead their respective classes.

* Becky Cook won the adult class in the ACU British Ladies Championship trial at Scarborough on Sunday. Katy Sunter (Healaugh) was placed third.

Harriet Peacock (Hipswell) took third place in Class A Youth, behind overall event winner Joanne Coles (Wirksworth). Skeeby's Chloe Richardson was second in Class B to Silsden rider Danielle Whitham. The Beta-Uk.com rider now leads the class by three points from Skeeby 12- year-old Chloe.

Class C was the highlight of the trial with Nikita Smith, from Fryup, and Thornton le Dale youngstser Kate Hunter locked in combat. Kaye posted the best lap but Nikita had the consistency to win, and she did. Hannah Richardson finihed third with two good laps but a poor opening lap.

In the Inter classes, experienced Emma Morphett, from Herne Bay, just headed Malton's Vicky Ellis and Kirkbymoorside physiotherapist, and mother of Dan and Jack, Jayne. Her husband Tim, a former East Yorks trials champion said after the trial thet more training was on the prescribed list for Jayne.

Askrigg 15-year old Robyn Alderson won Class A Intermediate by a mile.

* As Guisborough DMC Summer Series trials enters the final stages, Brotton rider Karl Dodderidge is determined to hang on to the crown he won last year. Riding in severe discomfort from damaged ribs he edged the win from Steven Hind, out for a one-off ride on a Fantic by four marks.

Mark Raw, from Castleton, produced a great ride to match Dodderidge's score and take the Best Intermediate award with a loss of eight. Held at the popular venue of Skelder Farm, Commondale, 85 riders turned out for a three-lap, ten-section course devised by Barry Overy and Howard Watson where every section proved tricky but cleanable.

With Rob Waite, Matt Maynard, Nikita Smith all posting relatively low scores to take Youth A, B and C classes, young Jake Whitlock is beginning to shine in the well supported conducted Youth D class and won on two marks lost from Guisborough's Jack Walker.

Following on from their successful Saturday night trial and barbecue on Saturday, Guisborough DMC's 55 competitors enjoyed great weather again for their annual Easy Trial held on the rocky moorland of Skelder Farm Commondale.

Clerk of course Barry Overy and helper Andy Metcalfe were kept busy as they replanned sections from the night before to ride easier, but when they saw the quality of entry arriving, they did their best to stiffen them up a little. It worked a treat as centre expert Ian Hopley rode his beautifullyprepped Majesty to a clear win from Richard Suffell and Colin Chapman.

Hopley earned his success with a superb spell of riding and concentration over the four lap, ten section course to remain unpenalised.

* Ian Austermuhle warmed up for the Alan Jefferies Trial at Halton Gill by winning the Bradford club's trial at Skyrakes from West Witton national youth starlet Richard Sadler.

Richmond rider John Sunter finished third.

To add to the visitor's rampage of awards Reeth lad Jack Stones, still in Class B age group, won the 50-50 hard and easy course.

The major event this week in the Yorkshire Dales is the national Alan Jefferies Trophy trial.

For over half a century the trial has attracted all the top local names but only 90 riders will leave the start at Halton Gill on Sunday morning.

Ian Austermuhle aims to win again, as he did last year. Dan Thorpe aims to stop the Rosedale Abbey contender.

Thorpe has a double mission, to run in his new Gas Gas engine after the Wainwright aquatics wrecked his engine, and win.

Sam and Ben Ludgate, Ben and Dan Hemingway, Tom Hick, Haworth domiciled John Sunter, Dan Farrer, Aran Drachenberg, Nathan Wrigglesworth and Darren Price may have other plans.

Dougie Lampkin, James Dabill, Jack Challoner and Michael Brown have other business in the Czech Republic riding the seven world trial at Kramolin on Sunday.
