AFTER weeks of dry, sunny weather, Dave Pickard, Masham Golf Club captain, must have been wondering what he had done to upset the Gods in a way that meant it rained for the whole of his Captain’s Day at Darlington Golf Course on Friday.

However, as the photograph shows, although conditions were wet and miserable, spirits were not dampened as Dave’s happy band of followers took to the fairways.

Having been well fed with bacon butties and coffee, the morning’s competition consisted of a ten-hole, team stableford.

Following a pleasant lunch, an 18-hole individual stableford ensued, if anything, in even wetter conditions than the morning as the ground, unable to absorb the rain, lay wet in parts.

Once back inside the clubhouse, the conditions outside were soon forgotten, as all 30-plus Masham visitors sat at their tables for a substantial roast dinner.

When the captain took to the floor to say a few words, most were agreeing with him, the day had gone well.

Before announcing the winners for the day, Dave gave thanks to Darlington Golf Club for hosting the day and congratulated the ground staff on the excellent condition of the course even with the wet conditions.

Thanks went to the catering and bar staff, and a special thanks went to the members of Masham Golf Club for supporting his day at Darlington. In return, the members raised a glass to their Captain.

In declaring the results, Dave made mention that although the conditions were somewhat difficult, the scores were surprisingly of a high standard.
