CHILDREN from a Dale gymnastics club are celebrating after having success in their first ever competition.

Barnard Castle Gymnastics Club, based at Teesdale Leisure Centre, in Barnard Castle, recently took part in a competition for those aged eight and under, which was held at Catterick Leisure Centre.

Each girl performed an individual floor routine to music as well as completing two vaults in front of a large audience.

Of the 34 children taking part in the age category, Isabella Killeen finished second while Bella Dupuy placed third.

Five gymnasts who made up the Barnard Castle team also came second overall in the competition, while the club was also awarded with a plaque for the best presented club.

Coach Claudia Barkes said all the coaches were extremely proud of the children.

She said: “The children worked so hard for this event and we are extremely proud of them.

“It isn’t easy performing in front of so many people on your own, especially in your first competition, but the children put their nerves to one side and were great ambassadors for the club.”
