East Yorks Centre annual Two Day Trial, Whitby, Saturday/Sunday

FENCING contractor Peter Sharp finally nailed the popular East Yorks Two Day Trial at the weekend, one of the few that has evaded his trophy cabinet in a twenty seven year trial career.

Minders nephew Matt and brother Mike kept him motivated as he and Carlton`s Matt Maynard put in a close finish, Sharp winning from Maynard on the most cleans rule with last year’s victor Tom Hick.

Good weather on Saturday the one hundred riders faced a day of thirty sections over a twenty mile route.

Sharp, in his usual unruffled style, and Hick, keen mountain biker now, with visitor Tom Moss from Surrey, next on one, then a host of riders all in with a shout on two including Maynard, Richie Kendra, young Joe Spivey and the slightly older Karl Dodderidge on the TRS.

The last hill climb out of Hollins Gill put paid to many clean sheets.

Danby`s Ian Hopley lost his only marks of the day, Dodderidge and Russ Rooksby needed one, but 19 year old Geology student Michael Todd was dreadfully unlucky.

Arriving on a clean sheet, he hit it spot on feet up to clean, only to go wrong side of the end flags for a five.

A shorter course for Sunday plus heavy rain added spice to the moor crossings.

Scarborough`s Mark Taylor, after a good ride Saturday, started badly fiving the relatively easy first at Hollin Gill, but on arrival at Ravens Gill the marks soon began to tot up, especially on the muddy climb of the fourth.

Sharp, Hick and Maynard all footed through, but Mick Sharp and Tom Moss had the bragging rights on this one, the only riders with one mark rides.

On punch card change Sharp and Hick led on three, Maynard was next on eight, Todd nine after five in Raven Gill, Rooksby and Shane Monkman just dropping off the pace in double figures.

The four girl entrants were putting some strong rides in, none better than Louise Alford when attacking the awkward tree step exit at Low North Park to escape on one, and a mention for Two Day regular for many years, the affable Geoff Brooker who grabbed the over sixty award.

With the top three all at the back of the field it was who could hold it together.

Hick and Sharp hit trouble with failures at Hellwith Beck, while Maynard fought back to level the scores, hanging on here for a one.

With the final two sections at Caravan Hill eased because of conditions, It came down to the most cleans rule.

`Sharpy` had three more than Matt and proved a worthy winner.
